BLACKBURN Rovers’ Premiership title-winning captain Tim Sherwood has confirmed he turned down the chance to return to the club as manager.

The current Aston Villa boss was linked with the vacant Ewood Park hotseat after Rovers parted company with the deeply unpopular Steve Kean in September 2012.

Sherwood was on the coaching staff at Tottenham Hotspur at the time.

And, speaking at the Blackburn Rovers Former Players Association Celebration of Champions event on Thursday night, he said: “I had my opportunity to manage this club, a few years ago, but I didn’t think the people in charge were probably as stable as the ones we had in charge in the time we won the Premier League, so unfortunately it didn’t happen for me.”

Sherwood went on to take over as Tottenham’s first-team boss in December 2013.

But, despite leading the White Hart Lane outfit into Europe, he was sacked in May 2014.

He returned to management in February with Tottenham’s Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

He has steered Villa to the brink of survival and to a place in the FA Cup final at Wembley in a fortnight’s time.

Sherwood said: “I’m enjoying it because it’s a job I want to do.

“I perversely like the pressure that it comes with it, but there’s a lot more jobs out there with more pressure in life than managing a football club.

“Aston Villa are a massive club, it’s a great opportunity for me, and I’m enjoying it.”

Sherwood captained Rovers to the top-flight crown 20 years ago.

The 46-year-old, a £500,000 arrival from Norwich City in February 1992, made 300 appearances for the club, scoring 32 times, before moving to Tottenham in February 1999 for £3.5m.
