The 300-strong crowd, including Rovers legend Bryan Douglas, hung on every word as Atkins and Newell explained how the club went from First Division hopefuls to top-flight champions in the space of four incredible seasons.

The popular duo were interviewed by BBC Radio Lancashire’s Andy Bayes and, after having posing for photographs with fans, took questions from the floor.

And, with tomorrow marking the 20th anniversary of Rovers’ Premiership championship victory, supporters were also given the chance to pose with the magnificent trophy.

Midfielder Atkins, who scored 39 goals in 314 appearances for the club between 1988 and 1995, said: “This is always going to be my club.

“I came here as a 19-year-old and I had seven fantastic seasons and it culminated in us winning the Premiership title, which was fantastic.

“It was a fantastic time for me personally, seeing the club grow. In my first home game I think there were about 6,800 here and my last game there were about 32,000.

“It was just a massive improvement to when I first came and the calibre of players I ended up playing with was second to none.”

Newell became the club’s first million-pound player when then Rovers boss Kenny Dalglish convinced Jack Walker to pay Everton £1.1m for his services in November 1991.

And it proved money well spent as it was the striker’s winning penalty in the First Division play-off final against Leicester City at Wembley in May 1992 that fired the club back into the big time.

Newell said: “It was a difficult decision to leave a club like Everton but I believed in the manager that signed me. I had great faith in Kenny Dalglish and if it wasn’t going to happen that season, it was going to happen under him.

“Obviously Jack Walker was the man behind it but there was only one man who could attract players at the time and that was Kenny Dalglish.”
