Tommy Sheridan will meet police today to discuss their investigation into the discovery of a bugging device' in his car.

The Solidarity leader called in officers yesterday amid concerns that there may be eavesdropping equipment in his vehicle.

Police went to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh after being called in by Mr Sheridan.

It is understood that during a search of a vehicle a bug', believed to be a transmitting device, was found hidden in the car.

Mr Sheridan said he was concerned and very angry' about the find in his silver Honda Civic in the car park at Holyrood.

His vehicle and the device has been taken to Lothian and Borders Police's Fettes headquarters for examination, he said Mr Sheridan added: "I'm concerned and I'm very angry. Lothian and Borders Police have asked me not to release any further details."

His wife Gail said she had no idea who would want to bug them.

"We don't really know who's behind it, although I have my suspicions.

"But if it's the Government I would be absolutely livid," she said.

The MSP won a high-profile libel victory over the News of the World last August after it printed lurid allegations about his sex life.

The tabloid is attempting to overturn the verdict after being ordered to pay Mr Sheridan £200,000 in damages and its appeal is due to be heard in December.

The Sunday newspaper later produced a video claiming to show Mr Sheridan admitting he had visited a swingers club in Manchester.

But the footage was dismissed as a concoction' by the Glasgow MSP, who claimed to be the victim of sinister forces'.

He said then: "The state has a fine history of trying to destabilise and undermine socialist movements or trade union struggles.

"And when the history of this whole episode is written about, I think you'll find that MI5 certainly was involved."

Colin Fox, who replaced Mr Sheridan at the helm of the SSP leadership, declared himself flabbergasted' by the latest development.
