Thousands of workers at Airbus will hear today if their jobs are safe despite an expected restructuring of the plane-maker.

Parent firm EADS will unveil its plans for future investment needs at a works council meeting in France.

Workers in France and Germany are reportedly expected to bear the brunt of the 10,000 job cuts, with around 1500 jobs expected to go in Britain.

It is reported Airbus will today announce plans to build a composites manufacturing facility near Bristol to supply its new A350 jets.

It was claimed many of the job losses in the UK would be workers on temporary contracts.

Airbus has around 13,000 workers in the UK at Broughton, north Wales and Filton, Bristol, designing and manufacturing wings.

Jobs are expected to be cut under the restructuring, but Britain is expected to remain the centre of aircraft wing production and research.

Airbus has 16 plants in Europe spread across the UK, Spain, Germany and France.

Keith Hazlewood, national officer of the GMB union, said: "There are lots of rumours surrounding the future of Airbus and the sooner the position is clarified the better.

"GMB members will be looking for assurances their futures are safe."
