FAMILIES living beside an accident blackspot are demanding urgent action to stop speeding drivers - before another pedestrian is killed.

They want the speed limit cut after a 74-year-old woman died in Drumchapel, Glasgow, on Monday night.

And they are calling for other traffic calming measures, claiming drivers hit speeds of up to 90mph.

The latest accident happened near the Drumry roundabout on the same stretch of Great Western Road where nine-year-old Demmi Adams was killed last September.

Meanwhile, a 28-year-old man remained critical today after he was knocked down on the road, a busy dual carriageway, just last month.

As reported in the Evening Times last night, Councillor Lawrence O'Neill is calling for a road safety investigation to prevent another tragedy.

Today neighbours in Onslow Road said the speed limit should be reduced from 50mph to 30mph.

Steven McQuillan, 20, of Onslow Road, said: "That road is absolutely terrible. It's not safe for children or elderly people to walk across it.

"They should reduce the speed limit - although drivers don't obey the speed limit at the moment.

"I've seen drivers speeding at 80 to 90mph. They should install some kind of traffic calming - such as speed bumps."

Mum-of-two Lorraine Johnston, 40, of Onslow Road, fears there could be another tragedy on the road.

She said: "My 12-year-old daughter is not allowed to cross the road except at the crossing and I don't let my son who is eight, cross the road at all. It is really dangerous."

Gran-of-two Morag Cochrane, 58, has lived in the area for 32 years and she says the road has always been an accident blackspot.

She said: "It's very dangerous - always has been. I don't allow my grandchidren anywhere near it.

"To be honest I really don't know what could be done to make it safer. Drivers consistently break the speed limits.

"Some of them even drive over the top of the roundabout."
