TROUBLED rocker Pete Doherty may be in trouble with the law again - this time over claims he smoked on stage in Glasgow.

The city council today confirmed it was to investigate after the hell-raising musician was snapped with a cigarette in his mouth at Barrowland.

Babyshambles singer Doherty, 27, has had many brushes with the law of late.

Last week he was given a two-month driving ban and a £300 fine for having no insurance or a licence.

And in December he was fined £770 for possession of drugs, including crack cocaine, heroin and cannabis.

Now he could face a £50 fine for apparently flouting the smoking ban as he came on stage at the legendary Gallowgate venue on Monday night.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said today: "We will investigate this matter."

Doherty, the boyfriend of supermodel Kate Moss, escaped a fine in December after smoking on stage in front of hundreds of fans in Inverness.

At the time, Highland Council said bosses at the Ironworks venue would receive a warning, because they had a responsibility for enforcing the legislation.

However, the officials said they would not pursue Doherty.

Glasgow City Council could not say today whether it would be contacting Doherty, who was playing the first of two nights at the Barrowland, about the incident.

But the spokesman added there was no suggestion Barrowland had turned a blind eye to the star or past performers smoking on stage.

Tom Joyes, spokesman for the Barrowland Ballroom, said he did not know if Doherty had been smoking.

But he said several fans had been thrown out of the gig for flouting the ban.

Mr Joyes said: "We had several ejections and quite a few of them were for smoking. We even had a few irate calls from parents angry their kids had been thrown out for smoking.

"Pete was a good boy - he came on stage on time and behaved himself. It could have been far worse. As far as I know, we didn't see him smoking."

Doherty's wild behaviour means he is rarely of the headlines Recent stories have included a scuffle with a photographer after a gig and claims he married Moss in a Bhuddist ceremony.
