A CHARITY appeal to ease the suffering in Malawi has raised more than £650,000.
STV today said its Christmas Appeal for the African country raised £655,000 through generous viewers in Scotland.
The cash will be used to refurbish Malawi's maternity hospital, which has one of the worst mum and baby death rates in Africa.
The appeal, launched on Scotland Today at the start of December, was backed by First Minister Jack McConnell and tycoon Sir Tom Hunter.
The campaign was also supported by stars such as Ewan McGregor and Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, Celtic boss Gordon Strachan and the Chancellor's wife Sarah Brown.
