TERRY BUTCHER today dismissed claims Scotland are suffering from a crisis of confidence up front ahead of their must-win World Cup qualifier with Iceland.

George Burley's team has failed to hit the target in the last three matches they have played against Norway, Argentina and Holland. And they have only found the back of the net once in six outings this season - in their 2-1 win over Iceland in Reykjavik way back in Septmber.

With Kenny Miller missing a great chance against the Dutch in Amsterdam on Saturday, speculation is rife about the make-up of the front line tomorrow.

Burley could field Steven Fletcher, Chris Iwelumo, Miller or Ross McCormack in a Group Nine game his side must win to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for South Africa next year.

However, assistant Butcher feels whoever gets the nod for the Hampden showdown will be able to score goals despite that poor recent record.

He said: "Two of the last three games were against Argentina and Holland. That is two pretty tough games.

"Better teams than us will go to Holland and not create a chance like we did in the first half and score a goal (Gary Caldwell's disallowed effort) like we did in the second half.

"Not scoring in so long and not winning at Hampden in 18 months concerns us very much. So does the fact that we have only got four points from four games in the group.

"But what concerns us even more is what we have to do. We have to be positive. We have to create chances and score goals and play in a very positive way.

"We haven't scored or won for a very long time and we want to put that right. We owe it to the fans who made the journey to Amsterdam.

"We know what we have got to do. If Scotland score one more goal than Iceland then we will be happy. How that comes about doesn't bother us.

"We don't have to play fantastic football. What is important is that we get all three points. If we do that everybody can breathe a sigh of relief."

McCormack performed well in his first start for his country against Holland and many members of the Tartan Army would like to see him involved against Iceland.

Butcher was also impressed with the former Rangers and Motherwell starlet who has done well since moving to Championship club Cardiff last summer.

He said: "We will set the team up and play the way we want to play. George Burley may or may not want to freshen the squad up. It is up to him.

"Ross had a very good game against Holland. He has had a very successful season and is part of our squad here. We will see."
