A NEW drug is set to help smokers stub out cigarettes - without the need for nicotine replacement.

Champix, which focuses on treating withdrawal symptoms, will soon be available on the the NHS.

In trials, almost half of those who used Champix - the brand name for varenicline tartrate - succeeded quitting smoking.

The drug provides relief to addicted puffers by sending neurological signals to nicotine receptors in the brain, providing relief from the cravings.

It also claims to work by ensuring those who relapse don't enjoy cigarettes as much as they once did.

Steve Crone, of the anti-smoking charity Quit, welcomed the new drug.

He said: "This drug will give Scots more choice from a good range of clinically proven treatments."
