RANGERS new boy Pedro Mendes today urged his Rangers team-mates to build on their Old Firm victory over Celtic.

The Portuguese midfielder was thrilled to help his side to a 4-2 victory over Gordon Strachan's side at Parkhead.

It hands the Ibrox club a three-point advantage over their title rivals and Mendes hopes to increase that gap over the coming weeks.

He said: "I think we've made a good start to the season.

"We have now won three out of our first four games three of which were away from home.

"And we have just faced two of our toughest away games. So from that point of view we are happy with the progress we have made. We are now three points ahead of Celtic and that is encouraging.

"Now we must build on this start. The confidence is increasing and we are putting in some good performances and we must try to keep this going for as long as possible and continue winning games.

"The most important match is always the next one. But we have to look at the next few weeks and make sure we keep winning and see if the other teams around us drop points but first we must be consistent."

Mendes loved every minute of his Old Firm debut and admitted the match was everything he hoped it would be.

"I really enjoyed the game," he said with a smile, "The atmosphere was terrific and it was a fantastic game.

"Scoring the goal was a special feeling. I just managed to catch it well and it was really satisfy- ing to see it hit the net.

"It was a fantastic atmosphere. In an away derby, when you are win- ning the best bit is when the stadium goes quiet. So it was a good victory for us and we must take confidence from it."
