THE final whistle may not have been blown on the current season at every level, but newly-promoted Cambuslang Rangers are already making plans for a changing of the guard.

Boss Alan Wardlaw saw his troops clinch a Central Second Division step-up place behind champions Vale of Leven and runners-up Thorniewood United, and now wants to revamp his squad.

The renowned ex-goalkeeper said: "Our aim was to get out of the Second Division, so it didn't really matter to me how we got over the finishing line.

"It was a bit nerve- racking at various times, but ultimately we got the job done and for that the players deserve every credit.

"However, as far as I'm concerned my focus from here on is to build on this success and do my utmost to help Cambuslang Rangers continue to improve their standing in the game.

" And on the basis of a 4-0 Central League Cup going over dished out by Port Glasgow last month, then we are nowhere near ready to mix it with the better First Division outfits.

"So it's looking very much like a rebuilding job is on the cards."

Wardy refuted suggestions of a total Somervell clearout and insisted he will be retaining a backbone of his promotion winning side.

However, one definite departure is that of long-serving defensive cornerstone Jim Kavanagh, who has called time on his celebrated career.

Meanwhile, desperately seeking an injection of experience and nous for his up-and-coming Thorniewood squad is gaffer John Fallon.

That's not altogether surprising, seeing as the oldest players in the Robertson Park dressing room are his own son John and ex-Pollok midfielder Darren Miller ... at only 26 years of age.

"We must have one of the youngest sides going the rounds," he said.

"Joe Tobin, Mick Daly, Mark Devanney and Paul Brown were all graduates from our Under-21 team while we also have a couple of 17-year-olds holding down jerseys.

"It would be great to get a sprinkling of old heads in to help with the development of these lads, but the simple facts are that top players command transfer fees and weekly wages which this club of ours simply cannot afford.

"Indeed, our success owes everything to promising local players turning down the pay packets on offer elsewhere in preference to wanting to come and play their football here."

It's doubtful if there will be a better prepared side operating in Central First Division circles next season after Fallon went on to reveal his players will report back for pre-season training ... in two weeks. Vale nail down 13

VALE of Leven boss Hughie Hammill has put preparations for the the end-of-season Evening Times Cup Winners Cup to nail down 13 of his squad as well as identifying one or two signing targets of his own .

Hammill said: "Alan Gourlay, Jack Buchanan and goalkeeper Matty Carr have all put pen to paper which is a terrific boost for everyone at the club.

"That means going with more or less the same players as this season other than possibly replacing the experience likely to be lost if Toby King, Alex Lacey and Hughie Ward call it a day. I'm hoping not all three of them ship out at the same time as guys who have been around the block a few times could make all the difference in a very competitive First Division."
