SCOTLAND'S first carnival for young disabled badminton players is set to sweep Glasgow next week.

The Bank of Scotland Disability Carnival will bring together 120 school pupils with physical and learning difficulties to play the sport in two sessions on May 15 at Scotstoun Leisure Centre.

BadmintonScotland announced the event hot on the heels of the first-ever Four Nations Disabled Badminton Championships to be contested in Scotland, held in Largs at sportscotland National Centre in early April.

The carnival aims to promote sport and healthy lifestyle for youngsters in Scotland while looking for the best sporting talent in advance of the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Schools participating include St Aidens Secondary in Glasgow, Hamilton School for the Deaf, Drummore School in Drumchapel, Linburn School in Hillington, Merkland School in Kirkintilloch, St Oswalds in Cathcart, James Reid School in Saltcoats, Glenburn School in Inverclyde, Cunard School in Clydebank and Hollybrook in Govanhill.

Russell Hogg, BadmintonScotland's development manager, said "BadmintonScotland, in association with Scottish Disability Sport, are delighted to be staging the first-ever Bank of Scotland Disability Play Badminton Carnival.

"This event will offer children a range of competitive and fun-related badminton activities which are aimed at improving and stimulating children's interest in the game. We hope that this can become an annual event giving children from all across Scotland the opportunity to participate."

Organisers now hope the event will become a regular feature having found such a positive response from schools in Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire.
