FOOTBALL fans could hold the key to a horrific murder.

Police today said they'd had a "slow response" to pleas for information about the death of dad-of-one Brian McQueen.

He was attacked by a knife gang in Blantyre shortly after the Rangers and Panathinaikos game ended last Wednesday. He died from his injuries the following morning.

Officers probing his killing today urged supporters to think back to last week.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Welsh said: "People may have been watching the football on BBC. I would ask members of the public to think back to last Wednesday night. They may remember hearing a disturbance in the street after the game finished."

Detectives believe four men were involved in the murder, which could have been a revenge attack.

DCI Welsh added: "At this time, it is unclear whether the men were on foot, or arrived in a car.

"Anyone who was in the area, and saw or heard anything whatsoever that may assist this investigation, is asked to come forward. Any piece of information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could be relevant."

Mr McQueen, of Springwell Crescent, was found in Hardie Street by a man walking his dog.
