A FEMALE shop assistant has died after plunging down a flight of stairs at one of Glasgow's biggest department stores.

The tragedy happened at the flagship Debenhams shop in Argyle Street.

The 38-year-old was treated at the scene by paramedics, before being rushed to hospital, but doctors couldn't save her.

A spokesman for Debenhams said: "We are saddened to confirm a female employee has died following an incident in our Glasgow store.

"Our thoughts go out to our employee's family and friends."

Police said emergency services rushed to the store around 5pm on Sunday, shortly before the shop shut.

The spokeswoman added: "Emergency services were called to attend to a 38-year-old woman who appeared to have fallen down a staircase.

"She was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where she was pronounced dead."

Health and safety officials are now expected to carry out a probe. There will also be a separate investigation by the city council's environmental health department.
