A PROBE was under way today after a fire swept through the £1million home of Rangers chief executive Martin Bain.

His wife and two sons had to flee the converted farmhouse near Loch Lomond as the blaze quickly spread to the roof following an explosion in the bathroom.

It's believed an electrical fault may have sparked the fire.

More than 20 firefighters were called to the blaze at Drymen early yesterday.

Mr Bain was not at home but his wife Susie and children Jack, 13, and Luke, 11, were woken by smoke and flames at 1am and fled to a neighbour's home.

Two fire engines raced to the sprawling home and senior fire officers called for two more appliances after discovering the roof was well alight.

Central Scotland Fire & Rescue said the blaze had been extensive but had been contained to the roof space, although the upper floors were badly damaged and fire crews had to undertake "extensive salvage work".

Fire crews remained at the scene for eight hours.

Mr Bain said a "fireball of flames" had exploded in the bathroom.

He added: "I'm just so glad my family are still alive. My wife says the kids were lucky to get out.

"I don't know yet if the whole house will be a write-off. I have loss adjusters and various people coming out to look at it."

He said he'd been told the blaze may have been caused by an electrical fault.

A fire brigade spokesman said: "There was nothing suspicious. The cause of the fire is subject to investigation."

Mr Bain, 40, bought the luxury home two years ago for £925,000 after selling a nearby house for £550,000.
