I understand that the council are trying to tackle the litter issue head on. Why then can they not pick up our weekly kerbside collection on the proper day?

Out of the last 10 weeks they have only managed this five times, and when they do they pick up what they want and leave other items.

Street sweepers are bagging items to be left for vans to pick up but they seem to be left for days before being picked up and in this time other people dump their rubbish next to the bags and it snowballs out of all control.

Just pick it up on the day you are supposed to and pick up all the street sweepers' bags at the end of their shift! DAN Pollokshields Traffic congestion

I attended the Celtic vs. Motherwell game at Parkhead last Saturday. It finished around 4.45pm and I jumped on a bus into town. The traffic congestion was such that by 5.45pm the bus had still not passed the Forge Market.

I could have driven to Edinburgh in that time.

This is the area designated to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014. If the authorities and organisers don't act quickly to sort out public transport in the area we will be a laughing stock. TM Glasgow Bridging the gap

On Sunday night I saw something unusual which should be commonplace. Young men and women about 18 to 20 years of age talking and laughing along with older people, some of whom must have been in their 80s. Then I reflected that it was Armistice Day.

What a pity that there is not more interaction between the generations. If there were, perhaps younger people would show more respect to their elders. NAME and address supplied Service is a winner

IN REPLY to the letter regarding the Free Hospital Visiting Service (November 10), I would like to clarify some of the points made.

My organisation is one of the operators who run this service in Glasgow on behalf of NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde.

I ask if Mr Mulholland has ever used the service or is he one of the lucky ones who owns a car? We transport many people, many vulnerable elderly and disabled, who are unable to use public transport due to health and other issues and this is what the service is all about.

I would ask Mr Mulholland to come on board one of our buses and find out for himself why people use the service and of what value it is to them and their families/friends who are in hospital.

This service is primarily for older people, individuals living with a disability, and people who are on low income or in receipt of benefit.

Everyone who has used the service has nothing but praise for the drivers and regard the service as a vital lifeline for those in hospital. IT MIGHT just be me, but with the exception of Grand Theft Auto IV, a violent computer game, I've never heard of any of the award-winning' programmes celebrated at Sunday's Scottish Baftas.

I hope the great and the good had a pleasant night out but considering the amount of public money pumped into some of these productions you might think they would let the public see them and judge them for themselves. BILL DOIG, Cathcart Same old luvvies

SCOTLAND is a small country, you can tell that because it's always the same half-dozen faces at these events: Lorraine Kelly (left), Bobby Carlyle, Brian Cox and the Taggart team.

Perhaps if BBC Scotland and stv showed more ambition we wouldn't get the impression these events involve the same luvvies' giving each other awards year in, year out. STEVIE, Milton Talent heads south

SCOTLAND makes lots of great films and TV programmes, trouble is the schedulers and film bookers down south don't think there is an audience for them.

Why do you think most of our talent heads south and ends up acting with English accents? LIZZIE, city centre Time to look forward

THE new Scotland's History TV show was fascinating, as is the series Scotland's Clans on BBC2. I just wish there were more programmes looking forward instead of looking back.

As well as a fascinating past, Scotland has a bright future. Why don't we see more of that on our screens? MATT TAYLOR, Maryhill Stone's not rock solid

GREAT Scottish film productions? Have you seen Stone of Destiny? The brave men and women who repatriated the Stone of Scone to Scotland in the 1950s should sue the director. KEITH WAREING, via e-mail Waiting for Summer

CAN anyone tell me when Summer, the film that won two Baftas, is coming out? I suppose it will get a one-week run at the GFT for a few dedicated film fans. BRIAN WALLACE, Bearsden Summer will be released in the UK on December 5.
