RANGERS still have no idea how much they will have to shell out to sign Andy Webster on a permanent deal.

The protracted move for the 25-year-old defender has been snarled up in yet more red tape as Fifa have still to inform Wigan how much compensation need to pay Hearts for his services.

Rangers will pick up that tab under a deal struck with Wigan - but as yet no figures have come through from the governing body, despite Webster's case being heard back on April 4.

This has left all parties extremely frustrated. Webster wants his future sorted out, Hearts want their money and Gers boss Walter Smith can't finalise his defensive situation for next season until a definite price is outlined.

Hearts are believed to have asked for around £5million after Webster invoked a new contract clause and then quit Tynecastle with a year of his four-year deal to go to join Wigan last August.

But sources expect the fee to be somewhere between £250,000 and £500,000 for the Scotland man who joined Rangers on loan in January with a view to a permanent deal. He is almost fit again after a knee injury, but is unlikely to play this season.

A Fifa spokesman confirmed: "There was a meeting of the player status committee at which several cases were discussed, not only the Webster one.

"Then it takes some time until they have written up those decisions, translated them and communicated them to the parties involved - the player, the clubs and the national association.

"For the time being, this hasn't been done so we don't have the decision. It is difficult to say how long it will take because the times can vary depending on how many cases were discussed on the day."

Smith, meantime, will look to secure second place when his side take on Celtic in the final Old Firm game of the season at Ibrox on Saturday.

Rangers have an eight-point lead over Aberdeen with three games to go and a superior goal difference of plus 14. But the job has not been done yet, and Smith is looking forward to his first home showdown with the Parkhead men since returning to the helm.

He said: "I don't think we can go into this one looking to lay down a marker for next season. We have just got to try and win the game.

"On paper it looks as though it doesn't mean much, although we still need a win for second place. But I am sure everyone will going in there motivated to win. Alan Hutton will be banned for the home game against Killie on May 13 after his booking at Easter Road took him through the points threshold.
