JOHN SUTTON says he would still be a St Mirren player today had the club offered him the deal he was looking for LAST summer.

The English striker looks to have played his last game for the Love Street outfit as he looks at other options on both sides of the border.

Sutton's contract expired at the end of the season and, with no shortage of suitors, the powerful front-man knows he could land a better deal elsewhere on a Bosman.

St Mirren have offered Sutton - who bagged 13 goals for them in the SPL last term - the best financial package they could, and hoped it would be enough to keep him at the club.

However, it appears likely that Sutton will move on, but he says he has no firm plans in place as yet - though he's aware that St Mirren are keeping their offer on the table.

He said: "I don't know what will happen. I'm on holiday and I've not thought about it. Once I get back I'll sit down with my agent and family and talk about what I want to do.

"It's hard to say what I'm thinking about doing, but I would be a mug not to look at my options.

"I don't think this would have been a problem had the club come up with the deal I was after last year.

"We won promotion to the SPL and I thought I'd get a contract that would keep me at the club for a couple of years. But that didn't happen and now I find myself in this position."

In addition to losing Sutton, boss Gus MacPherson could also find himself without striker Billy Mehmet.

Like Sutton, his deal has expired and he is also looking at his options after being offered a new contract.

Unlike other SPL clubs, Saints were unable to commit to contracts until they knew what division they would be playing in.

And with their relegation battle going down to the last two games, MacPherson had to leave it late before he could begin working on plans for next season.

But he is not confident that Sutton will be playing for the Paisley club next season.

He said: "The longer it goes on, the more unlikely it is John will come back.

"I've not heard anything from Billy, either." Dundee United have signed Cardiff youngster Willo Flood, 22, on a season-long loan deal.
