A SQUAD of young hotel workers who offered their services as a team to the hospitality industry have secured new jobs - at an exclusive private members' club.

The happy, hard-working brigade were devastated when they lost their jobs at the former Bewley's Hotel in Bath Street, Glasgow after the venue changed hands in a £10million deal.

But they didn't wallow in self-pity and, determined to stay together, honed their CVs to send out joint applications to hotels and restaurants.

Now, just two weeks later, more than half the 13-strong team has been snapped up by private members' club 29 in Royal Exchange Square to serve millionaires, pop stars and footballers.

Michael Bergson, general manager of Lynnet Leisure which owns 29, the Grill Room and One Up, read about their plight in the Evening Times and arranged interviews.

He said: "We spoke to five front-of-house staff who we have taken on and we are also talking to two chefs.

"They all did excellently at interview and are very experienced.

"One of the things we look for is people enjoying working in the industry and the fact that they wanted to stay together was a bonus.

"Generally, it's hard to find people who really want to do the job because a lot of people just fall into it.

"The team from Bewley's really wanted to work in the industry."

The workers began an extensive training programme at the 1800-member club last week.

Their new customers will include Scotland's richest man Tom Hunter, Liverpool footballer Steven Gerrard, bra queen Michelle Mone, Rangers boss Walter Smith and businessman Chris Gorman.

Amie Barclay-Philp, 19, of Springburn will work front-of-house at 29.

She said: "Everyone is really pleased we have been taken on because it means most of us can stay together as a team.

"We can't believe we've got jobs so quickly and we're all earning more money than in our last jobs, which is fantastic."

The remainder of the team are pursuing other options in the hospitality industry and are expected to secure alternative employment in the coming weeks.

The eight-storey, 104-room, Bewley's Hotel, which has been renamed 110 Bath Street for the past three months, was bought last September by Rossmark Hotel Group, which wants to turn it into a "boutique experience" called Marks.
