CHARLIE ADAM is in line for a shock call-up for Scotland.

The Rangers star, who netted his 14th goal of the season in his side's 2-0 win over Celtic at Ibrox on Saturday, has impressed national boss Alex McLeish.

And Big Eck is set to hand the 21-year-old midfield ace his first cap in a friendly against Austria in Vienna on May 30.

The free-kick specialist could even be in line to face the Faroe Islands in a vital Euro 2008 qualifer in Toftir a week later.

If Adam does get the nod, it will be a remarkable rise to prominence for the Dundee-born player, who last season on loan helped St Mirren land the First Division title.

McLeish will name his squad for the double-header at Hampden on Friday, and with Nigel Quashie injured Adam looks set to be included.

Rangers boss Walter Smith feels Adam deserves the honour after being impressed with his contribution since he returned to Ibrox.

Walter said: "Charlie has been doing very well this season with free-kicks and has scored a fantastic number of goals.

"For someone in his first season in the first team, he has played a lot of games and has contributed greatly. He works hard, has terrific attitude and wants to succeed as a player."

Meanwhile, Adam has paid a glowing tribute to former Gers manager Paul Le Guen for giving him his chance in the first team.

Charlie said: "At the start of the season, I never expected to make such an impact, but I have a lot of gratitude to Paul Le Guen.

"He was always excellent with me and gave me my chance to play for this club. I owe him so much and tried to repay him through my performances while he was here.

"Now Walter is the manager and it's great that he believes in me, too. I just want to keep playing well here.

"I have 14 goals for the season now, but there are two games left and I would love to add to that tally."

Elsewhere, Smith has again been linked with a move for Blackburn Rovers defender Andy Todd.

Todd, who joined the Ewood Park club from Charlton Athletic for £750,000 five years ago, has lost his first-team place this season.

Rovers manager Mark Hughes is prepared to let the 32-year-old player leave for nothing, even though he has a year left on his current deal.

Todd, who has also attracted interest from English Premiership strugglers Wigan, was thought to be a target for Rangers in January, soon after Smith returned to Ibrox.
