NFU Scotland launched a high-profile, national campaign yesterday to encourage people to choose Scottish food and drink.

The food and farming campaign will highlight not just the quality of Scottish food and drink, but the environmental, animal welfare, health and social benefits of buying Scottish.

The new campaign, entitled "What's on your plate?" encourages people to think about their food and drink choices and the positive impact they can have on the nation.

Scottish farms produce £2.4bn of output and are fundamental to the Scottish economy, with one in 10 Scottish jobs dependent on farming.

The launch took place in a field at the Norton House Hotel, Ingliston, Edinburgh, with the NFUS board of directors, comprising farmers from across the country, dining on a meal of quality Scottish food (see above).

The campaign, led by farmers from across Scotland, will involve a range of events from school visits to farms, to information campaigns outside supermarkets and the Scottish Parliament, and barbecue events to show off local produce.

It is backed up by a website at www.whatsonyourplate.co.uk with over 40 pages of information.

NFUS president Jim McLaren said: "By buying Scottish food, we don't just invest in quality, we help safeguard our unique habitats and wildlife, tackle the increasing problem of food miles and underpin our rural communities and tens of thousands of jobs."
