Health watchdogs in Scotland last night moved to reassure the public over the regulation of botox and other cosmetic procedures.

It came as the West- minster government yester- day came under fire for failing to introduce independent scrutiny.

In Scotland the Care Commission has responsibility for regulation.

Ministers south of the border yesterday said they would instead call on the industry there to police itself over standards after there were concerns anyone there could "set up shop".

Susan Brimelow, director of healthcare regulation at the Care Commission, said: "We regulate those services that offer botox treatments including private hospitals and four clinics which were previously registered with health boards.

"We ensure that botox is prescribed by a registered medical practitioner, administered by people who are suitably qualified and competent to do so, and that it is stored safely."
