Iomart subsidiary, Easyspace, one of Europe's largest web hosting companies, yesterday announced the opening of a new high-specification data centre in the heart of the City of London.

Constructed specifically for the purpose of large-scale server hosting and co-location, the data centre offers a combined net capacity of 16,000 sq ft of high-quality, resilient and secure data centre space.

The data centre contains a state-of-the-art environment and security control system, fully redundant power and market-leading network infrastructure.

Easyspace, currently operates datacentres in London, Glasgow and Nottingham and will be opening new facilities in Leicester and Leeds later this year. Customers range from Stagecoach to Strathclyde Police.

The centre, "a stone's throw away from Liverpool Street Station", was part of £4.5m acquisition by Iomart of a 51% stake in data centre company Ezee DSL in April.

Phil Worms, Iomart's marketing manager, said: "The servers it will house are the drivers of the internet, and the customers who will buy space are literally buying their virtual worldwide shopfronts.

"There is a serious shortage of data space at the moment, and that makes this such a good opportunity for us.".

Sarah Haran, managing director of Easyspace, said: "Recent predictions indicate that existing UK carrier neutral data centre capacity will effectively run out this year.

"The banks and financial institutions in the City have to store huge volumes of data simply to do business, and having that data nearby in a secure environment is of great benefit.

"This is a totally new facility and we have not been restricted in its design by any legacy equipment or operations. We have therefore been able to build this facility to incorporate all the critical data management and business continuity features that organisations require both today and tomorrow."

Iomart shares firmed 2p to 70.5p.
