LAST season's Scottish cross-country winner, Susan Partridge, who did not defend last week at Perth, is to contest the Spanish national cross-country championships this weekend in Gallicia.

''I'm living in Barcelona now, logging 90 miles a week as I prepare for my marathon debut in London,'' she said yesterday. ''I'd made up my mind to do London before the Olympic qualifying was reduced to 2:37, so I'll have a go at that. But if I made the Olympics I'd be a bit out of my depth.''

The first Briton, provided they achieve the qualifying time, is guaranteed Athens selection.

Simon Pride, who ran the Commonwealth event for Scotland, does the Seville marathon this weekend, having run his best half, (64.54) at Lossie-mouth recently. He believes he is capable of the men's qualifying mark of 2.15.
