A Catholic nun in India's poorest and most lawless state was allegedly abducted by two men, stripped, and forced to drink their urine as a warning against converting Hindus.

Two men hijacked the nun's taxi in India's eastern Bihar province. They threatened her with a knife and forced her to a secluded area.

The men urinated in a bottle and threatened to rape her when she tried to resist, a local bishop said. The men said this would be a lesson to her not to convert Hindus, the Statesman reported.

Christians form a tiny minority in Hindu-majority India, making up roughly 2% of the country's nearly one billion people.

Archbishop Alan de Lastic, president of the United Christian Forum for Human Rights, wrote to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee demanding immediate action.

He also referred to threats by the leaders of two extremist Hindu organisations, which are affiliated to Vajpayee's Hindu Nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, to conduct street protests during the Pope's visit to New Delhi in November.

q At least five people were killed yesterday when police fired bullets to disperse mobs of Hindus and Muslims who clashed during processions carrying images of the elephant god Ganesh. At least 40 people were injured in the violence in Surat and Hyderabad.
