EDINBURGH Monarchs host their biggest race meeting of an eventful season tonight when they clash with Arena Essex in the second leg of the Knockout Cup final.

The first leg was at Arena last night and Monarchs are desperate to land national silverware to put the icing on what has undoubtedly been one of their best seasons.

Third place in the 13-strong Premier League, equalling their previous best in 1951 and 1994, followed a lengthy challenge to eventual winners Sheffield Tigers.

The Armadale-based combine were also runners-up in the inaugural Premier National Trophy falling at the final hurdle to Newport Wasps last weekend.

Monarchs turned on the power to edge Sheffield to make the Knockout Cup final and it is a competition they have won twice in 1997 and 1981.

Glasgow Tigers, 21 ppoints adrift, host the second leg of the Charity Shield against fellow Premier League strugglers Workington Comets at Ashfield tomorrow.

Tigers' back-room staff are already working on two major promotions before they bring the curtain down on their first season at Ashfield.

The first is the Spring Cup clash with holders Edinburgh Monarchs on Sunday week which was postponed from the beginning of the season when Tigers did not have a track. The second comes a week later when some of the best riders currently performing in Britain will hopefully go to the tapes for the Ashfield Classic.

Elite League stars as well as leading riders from the Premier League have been asked along with former Tiger Robert Nagy.
