LUKE Varney says he is eager for the chance of regular football after completing his loan move from Blackburn Rovers to Ipswich Town.

Varney had not started a league game for Rovers this season and has now joined Ipswich on an initial month’s loan.

The deal is likely to be extended until the end of the campaign and the forward, who was also linked with Millwall during the January transfer window, is hopeful of securing regular game time under Mick McCarthy at Portman Road.

Ipswich currently sit fourth in the Championship table – five places and 14 points above Rovers.

“I’d had a bit of interest from other clubs but to be honest I think once I’d heard about Ipswich a couple of weeks ago I was delighted to hear of the interest,” Varney said.

“The manager just basically said that I’d get to play and hopefully have a bit of an impact.

“He made me feel that I could be a part of it and that’s all I wanted really. It’s been a difficult spell at Blackburn so I’m just really pleased to be here and hopefully I can help out in any way possible.

“To join a club that is in a great position was a no brainer.”

Varney now has his sights set on automatic promotion.

“That was the aim at Blackburn from the start of the season, things haven’t quite panned out but it’s a funny league,” he said. “A few wins and they could be up there, they’re still going for it. But to join a club that is in a great position was a no brainer and something that I’m really looking forward to.”

Rovers defender Yann Songo’o made a trial appearance for Colchester United’s under 21s on Thursday afternoon.
