Bolton Wanderers boss Dougie Freedman is not feeling the pressure despite Brighton defeat

MIND ON THE JOB Dougie Freedman is concentrating on the task in hand and not the pressure on him

First published in Sport

DEFIANT Dougie Freedman has played down the pressure placed on his own position after Wanderers’ poor start.

Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Brighton leaves the Whites third bottom with a meagre haul of just one point from their first four outings.

Freedman watched his side lose a winning position for the third consecutive Championship game in a row.

And finding himself answering to an increasingly frustrated set of supporters, many of whom are now calling for a change in management, the Scot insisted he was the right man to turn things round.

“I don’t worry at all,” he said. “I know what I have to do.

“I have been in this position a few times in the last five years as a young manager. I started in the bottom three, so I’m fine with the pressure.

“I understand the fans’ frustration – I share it – but as players and staff we are working very hard right now. And we are missing certain components of the game.”

Wanderers had to wait 10 games for their first win last season, which amounted to their worst start in more than a century.

They are a point behind even that total at present, however, but Freedman believes his side are stronger than they were 12 months ago.

“I’m not that concerned because it’s only a start,” he said.

“We are playing a lot, lot better than we were last year but I accept that we’ve got to get some points on the board.

“I understand where we are and what we need to do. I understand that to ask for patience is very difficult for people to take.

“But you’ve just seen that when you are down this game can be very difficult. It can be frustrating.

“It’s just that little bit of quality we need, a little bit better decision making on the ball or near the goal.”

Many disgruntled fans contacted The Bolton News through social media and email over the weekend to demand changes at the top.

The indications are, however, that the club will continue to stand by the Scot they brought in from Crystal Palace nearly two years ago.

He has an immediate chance to get a win on the board against Crewe in the Capital One Cup tomorrow night but knows that progress in the league is how he will ultimately be judged.

“It is a results business and there’s no problem with that at all,” he said.

“As the manager I need to make sure these players understand their responsibilities – and that’s to get themselves and the club up towards the top of the league.

“I honestly think I’ve got the nucleus of a good group in there, it just needs to hang on better at certain times.”

Phil Gartside's the leech on our club, £500k a year and that's only the stuff through the books. Bad decisions all the way since the fall out with Sam. Will the truth ever come out?

I gave up my season ticket when they got Megson in years ago and things have got even worse since. Bad decisions all round and Gartside treats the club like his personal play thing. Freedman is an inflexible, unimaginative manager who talks a good game, but who is unable to put things into place to make a difference. The only players he will bring in are yes men who will do his bidding.
He signs players who are in their late twenties, who have worked with him before and who can run around a lot. No craft, quality or guile.
It will be a long time before this rubbish makes a difference.

A chairman who has failed year after year in manager recruitment and the finance side, seems to be rewarded for failure on an annual basis.

It's time Eddie Davies stood up & spoke, communicated and actually acted like a leader. You own the shares Eddie, but this club belongs to the people of Bolton. Have a quick look at the statue the next time you 'fly in' to see us..

Freedman is in total denial.

Reading his comments you'd think that we are unlucky to lose these games but the match statistics show this for the lie that it is.

Every team we play is dominating possession against us and having 2 or 3 times the number of attempts on goal that we are - and this is with his team - not Coyle's.

One attempt on target against Brighton - how do you expect to win playing like that?

This is relegation form unless things change.

Freedman's comments are complete nonsense - BN journalists must challenge them and hold him to account!

I agree, freedman should go but the club don't seem to be in the best financial position to sack him and he won't walk away. He does need money to spend in the next few days or its back to loans. What we don't want are other clubs taking our so called better players at the last minute leaving us short. I'm bolton through and through and it hurts like he'll to see us as we are now. Unlike thousands of others I can't give up. It's our club and we need to play our part and get behind the team and raise the roof. Money for big signings is a thing of the past.we need to accept that and be realistic. The days of us playing the likes of bayern munich are long gone. We can blame freedman all we like but this rot set in years ago and as got worse and worse due to mis management and very poor decisions from the top.

I'm assuming that Eddie Davies has made it clear that very little money will be made available for transfers, and who can blame him after all the millions that were wasted by Megson and Coyle ? Even multi-millionaires have their limits.
Freedman has had to get rid of most of the players who got us relegated from the premier league because they were costing the club too much and they weren't producing. He has replaced them with the tried and tested loan players who saved our bacon last season. With virtually no money to spend, what else could he have been expected to do ?
All of BWFC's problems can be traced back to the club's refusal to allow Sam Allardyce to spend the prize money for those four top ten finishes in the premiership. He loved our club and if he'd been given just £10 million a season, we'd still be up there.
Now we're in a mess, but sacking Freedman won't solve the problem. He's doing what he was brought in to do, to develop young players, and until he unearths a few Alan Stubbs and Jason McAteers, or until the club persuades someone with more money than sense to take an interest, we're just going to have to get used to it.

the real culprit is Gartside, inside 11 years he not only blew £500 million in revenue, he added another £165 million in debt. He gave players premiership contracts with no clause added wages would be slashed in the event of relegation, he signs one useless manager after another and oversees transfers that result in massive multi million losses. for an accountant the man is completely and utterly useless , as for personal greed how on earth can he claim annual £170,000 bonuses to top up his £350,000 part time salary when the club was recording massive losses. I regard him to be pure scum.

"I want there to be one chance, and we win 1-0" . This is not the world cup final. This is an unpredictable league where you are likely to get many chances to convert. Dougie isn't the man for the job. He can't get the team to gel. He is changing the team up far too much. Inconsistent performances and results. Poor value for money to sit and watch a team that aims to win 1-0. And when that backfires, he throws on Beckford for the last 5 minutes. A manager who is purely gaining experience and seeing out his contract for the sake of money and grabbing another opportunity once this expires. No passion about the club or fans. Clearly Bolton can't afford compensation due to rising debt, If he did care about the club, he would get up and leave before Christmas. Apply for the Palace job now you have gained experience, or an international team where your tactics will be useful in the Euro 2016 finals.

He doesn't really sound convincing, most fans aren't convinced, what must some of the players think? There's no passion for the shirt. Listen to SJMcG at 1 on Tower FM - it's a good reminder of what BWFC used to be and should be about ! Let's not wait until the usual mid October to make a decision. IT'S TIME FOR CHANGE....act now! Let's get management in who do care about the club i.e. give Jimmy Philips and David Lee a chance, maybe bring Brownie back ? Alternatively, Pulis, Hughton, Clarke - all available and all have succeeded at this level. If any of them fancy the challenge then get in before it's too late...but whatever, move DF on, quickly.

I agree wholeheartedly with all the comments about Garside.
The writing was on the wall when Bolton were still in the premier league and he allegedly suggested that there should be no relegation from the
Premier League. I wonder if he would suggest it now.
