Upbeat Blackburn Rovers boss will not be underestimating Blackpool

AS soon as Gary Bowyer breezed into the media centre at Brockhall yesterday lunchtime it was clear the Blackburn Rovers boss had put what happened on Tuesday night firmly behind him.

Not that his players got off scot free for their performance in the loss to Scunthorpe United.

After being given a dressing room dressing down they were informed that their day off had been cancelled.

But after going through the 1-0 defeat on Wednesday morning, attention quickly shifted to tomorrow’s derby clash at troubled Lancashire rivals Blackpool.

Pool still remain in a state of disarray after a shambolic summer which at one stage left new manager Jose Riga with just eight players to call on.

Bowyer has sympathy for Riga, whose side also crashed out of the Capital One Cup in midweek to lower-division opposition having lost their Championship opener at Nottingham Forest.

But the belief that the Belgian does not have talented players to call on cuts little ice with his counterpart.

Upbeat Bowyer said: “I went and watched Blackpool and Stuart Pearce’s comments after the game that they were better than Forest in the second half I would agree with.

“I think there’s a little bit of kidology if you like about how small a squad they have.

“If you look at their squad I think he (Riga) has now signed 15 players on top of the eight players that he already had – and I know he keeps asking for more, which we all do.

“I can understand him asking for more time. We talk about this club needing two more transfer windows – a-year-and-a-half or two years – to build a team, but this poor bloke has had to do it in six weeks, or he may say six days.

“But we’re not going to be kidded by that. They are a decent team, the players he has already assembled there are good players – some with Championship experience – and we know we’re going to be in for a tough game because it’s their first home game as well.

“We’ve done our homework on every signing that they have made but it’s about what we do, how we play, how we press, and how we defend and attack. It’s all about us.”

Bowyer made 10 changes for the first-round clash with Scunthorpe.

However the vast majority of the players he called into his starting line-up will not retain their places for tomorrow’s trip to Bloomfield Road, where Rovers will be cheered on by 2,300 supporters after the club sold out its ticket allocation.

But Bowyer has made it clear that those who disappointed on Tuesday still have important roles to play.

He said: “If you look at those players throughout last year they’ve got this club back to where we are at this present stage.

“Everybody has a bad day at work and it was a bad day at work. It’s how you respond and that’s the challenge now.”

And Bowyer, who the hailed the backing his side will receive from the stands tomorrow as ‘fantastic’, added: “Tuesday has gone.

“We dealt with Tuesday on Tuesday night, the day off got cancelled, we were all in on Wednesday, and that was the end of it. The disappointment has gone.

“Fortunately for us we’re positive people and we’re honest people and we took our medicine on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

“Now we’re really excited and looking forward to a local derby.”

Bowyer will once again be without striker Chris Brown and left back Tommy Spurr for Rovers’ first away match of the campaign.

Centre back Matt Kilgallon has not trained since coming off in the season opener against Cardiff with a back injury although he could come into contention if he makes his return to training today.

Bowyer is looking to bring in defensive cover after being given the green light by owners Venky’s to delve back into the loan market.

But, with Michael Keane’s immediate future at Manchester United still unclear, he insists he will wait to get the right man.

Bowyer said: “The phones are glued to our ears at the moment, we’re constantly making calls.

“But you listen to managers in the Premiership who have got a hell of a lot more funds than we have and they’re struggling to bring in players.

“So it’s very difficult and we’re not hiding from that. “But we’ve got to try and bring the right person in – I’m not just going to bring somebody in just to be a number because that’s a waste of a loan.”

Still getting the 2 or 3 more transfer windows garbage!
We are coming out of transfer windows with a weaker squad both in terms of numbers and the skills to open teams up.
OK we might be in a better FFP position, and we may have got rid of difficult characters to handle (is the job of a good manager not to get the best out of difficuly characters?), but I will take a lot of convincing that Varney or Brown have anything like the potential ability of Best or Rochina or even (sacrily enough) Cambell and Goodwillie.
I was looking forwad to this season so much, and that optimism is fading rapidly, not seen a single win yet, despite 4 games against teams from a lower division - sadly missed the Telford game

Football is a very simple game ! it,s just that those who have never played the game really cannot grasp the idea of how easy the modern footballer has got it. there is nothing technical about it-if your team are only average in the ability stakes then you have to put in the effort as a unit and if you do that you can surprise a few of the better teams. my point being do not treat any team as an easy ride because if you do you will be found out,,,,and Blackpool tomorrow is one of those perfect examples.C O Y B

You keep saying this Bowyer as though you've turned the club from the brink of obliteration to success. I'd argue the period before your appointment our expectations were a lot higher, we expected to beat teams like Huddersfield, Charlton, Millwall. Now most of us have accepted our position and "a draw against Cardiff is a good result".
Granted things have improved but not as much as you like to think.

4 wins was the difference between 12/13 and 13/14, which simply having a stable manager probably brought us.
For me, we won't achieve promotion until we have a manager with some attacking nous about him. This type of article "Bowyer won't underestimate Blackpool" means we will be playing a defensive setup once again.

"give instruction to get more goals"

If only it was this simple Matthew. I wonder sometimes what instructions Bowyer actually does give to his players given the shambles we witnessed the other night. Another poor performance and surely he has to go?

Firstly I haven't seen a reference to "2 or 3 years" this season, I have seen a reference to "2 seasons including this", last season it was "It will take 2 seasons before we are on an even keel".

So we pull out the stops to keep Rhodes, who according to every pundit and detractor on the planet is leaving us every window?
We have signed decent quality players like Cairney, Gestede, Conway who have experienced promotion from the Championship with other clubs.
We have signed players like Spurr, Evans, Marshall, Killgallon, (albeit some very ordinary ones as well, but what manager doesn't?)

GB does give players a chance, but if they don't measure up they are soon shipped out.

That's a Championship team, not Division 1.

Added to that GB has removed the bad buys and total wasters signed by Kean, Singh and the other three managers that wreaked havoc with the club for over two years.

And all the time having to contend with FFP.

You don't get it do you? Under FFP Rovers have to break even each year or risk being penalised financially and possibly face a transfer embargo until they comply, that would mean bye to players like Rhodes, Gestede and the rest.

By clearing the decks this season (apart from Best who is milking us for every penny) Rovers are obviously taking a financial hit this season, but that costs serious money, money we don't have, money that Venky's cannot invest in us because of FFP.

We don't know what our deficit for last season is yet, but because we are taking that hit it's going to be pretty significant.

It's a catch 22, There is absolutely nothing Venky's can do about this, despite being billionaires they are severely restricted as to the amount money they can invest in the playing staff because Rovers don't pull in enough money through ticket sales, merchandising, sponsorship, etc. to break even.

Around 16,000 fans are willing invest in the club, many of these including myself have little or no time for Venky's, but we still support our club, that's what the club needs.

Not so called fans who don't turn up and do nothing but criticise.

You didn't see many Burnley games last season then did you?

Cavalier? excuse me for a minute while I wipe away the tears of laughter.

Burnley played to their strengths all season, strengths that were based on a very solid defensive set up and the ability to break with pace, their style was to frustrate then hit and run.

Remember why Williamson was sent off for bringing Ings down? He was the last man and Ings would have creamed him for pace, and probably scored.

Not knocking it, with the players they had they were excellent tactics.

But they were never, ever Cavalier.
