THE main focus of any pre-season match is not necessarily the result, but to emerge with all players intact.

Jordan Rhodes’ penalty earned Rovers a draw, but Lee Williamson’s red card was something Gary Bowyer could have done without.

As Williamson trudged off, dismissed for a challenge on Bury forward Ryan Lowe just before half time, Bowyer was livid.

The Rovers boss gesticulated at referee Darren Handley, pointing out that it was Williamson’s first foul of the game.

Certainly there have been times in the past when referees might have taken a more lenient view in a pre-season friendly.

But Williamson had put himself in a risky position by making such a challenge. Known as a tough-tackling midfielder, he lunged in late and paid the price.

The reaction of Bury’s players and fans only hastened the referee’s decision.

Bowyer would never have wanted to play for more than 45 minutes with 10 men, although in the end Rhodes cancelled out Danny Nardiello’s goal for Bury.

Rovers had already gone into the game without a number of players, with Alex Baptiste ruled out with a foot injury while Matt Kilgallon did not feature because of a back problem.

Chris Taylor was also absent with a dead leg, while Ben Marshall and Rudy Gestede missed out through illness.

Several more players – including Adam Henley, David Dunn, Markus Olsson, Luke Varney, Ruben Rochina, Yann Songo’o and John Sullivan – featured in a behind closed doors friendly earlier in the day.

There was still no debut for striker Chris Brown, who has been suffering from a knee injury since his arrival from Doncaster Rovers last month.

There was a familiar face in the main stand at Gigg Lane, with former Rovers forward Benjani watching on – having recently retired from playing.

Jason Lowe lined up at right back for Rovers, with Tom Cairney featuring on the right wing , while Josh King played alongside Rhodes up front.

The travelling Rovers fans almost saw their side take the lead early on when Bury’s Baghdad-born keeper Shwan Jalal had to parry Corry Evans’ fierce 25-yard effort.

Gary Bowyer’s men then had a goal disallowed when King’s low 20-yard shot deflected in off Rhodes, only for the flag to be up against Rovers’ star striker.

The Shakers soon had a goal disallowed for offside themselves, after Lowe had turned in Nardiello’s cross.

Then came Williamson’s dismissal on the stroke of half time.

Bowyer watched the second half from the stand, with Anthony O’Connor and rarely used Portuguese midfielder Paulo Jorge introduced after the interval.

Conway twice narrowly missed the target for Rovers, before Bury went ahead with 19 minutes left as Nardiello headed home at the near post from Chris Hussey’s free kick.

Rovers levelled in the 85th minute, though, as Jim McNulty tripped King in the box and Rhodes calmly sent Jalal the wrong way from the spot.

Rovers: Paul Robinson; Jason Lowe, Grant Hanley, Jack O'Connell, Tommy Spurr (Paulo Jorge 67); Tom Cairney, Lee Williamson, Corry Evans (Anthony O’Connor 46), Craig Conway; Josh King (Modou Cham 86); Jordan Rhodes (Jordan Preston 86). Subs not used: David Raya.

1 - 1 against Bury? Hardly impressive. Williamson is a complete prat getting sent off in a friendly. He was poor last season and - hopefully - won't make the side if the best midfield 4 are fit i.e. Conway, Cairney, Evans and Marshall

Your 1st championship match is in nine days time, ours is nineteen. A man sent off, equalizing from a penalty late on, against league 2 opposition! I would have thought you would be close now to displaying what the championship should expect next season.

It was a pre season friendly, not the full first team, result not important as you well know as does most football fans. But you have clowns like S.C. who have to make stupid remarks like "absolute stinker, agent Bowyer, pathetic performance",etc, makes one wonder if he ever has been to a football match, but then again, all clubs have them.

Not as grim as Burnley loosing 1 - 2 Preston.

I hear a certain Steven Reid was injured before he has kicked a ball in anger, as were most of your recent signings.

That should ring a few alarm bells for you guys or klaxons even air raid sirens, because the excreta is going to hit the whirly bits for you pretty soon.

Personally these are just practice games, getting players fit, or in Burnley's case unfit, before the real hostilities start in the next couple of weeks and anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded.

Scores are irrelevant in this context.

Agreed.Had enough with just injuries last season,we can do without red cards on top of that.Leave him out. Send him to Burnley, they love him there.

Time GB started to use his main players now or they will hardly be match fit for the Cardiff game. Paulo Jorge I thought his contract had been terminated long ago. Just shows we have too many fringe players. Trying to give these players a fair crack is nearly impossible and it may be disrupting our pre-season preparations a bit trying to look at all these guys.

Bet you've charmed a few snakes in your time haven't you ya big puff! Doesn't matter where money comes from, it's what you do with it pal.... Let me give you an example...

Rovers spending 1994: £25,000,000.00
Same value today: £43,402,500.00

Dingles windfall 2014: £120,000,000.00
Same value in 1994: £69,120,442.37

Guess that means you win the premiership this year eh?? Get down bookies and put a wager on, it's 7500/1, you only need to busk for a quid and you'll be able to pay your mortgage! :)

Kevin Gallagher said only yesterday that we should be "fine tuning " our starting eleven in these last two friendlies, yet here again we have five out through illness or injury four of which would have probably played last night. Not complaining about the result last night but this does hamper our preparation for when the season starts proper.
I only said yesterday that this was the first time in a while that we weren't "going into a season with a raft of injuries" . Hope the injury hoodoo doesn't hit us once again
BTW... There will probably be a few finishing black and blue at weekend after Sparky's lot have finished with us.....lol.

Your last sentence should be read as lack of ambition and the reason you've never won a thing since the Boer War. This season is no different as you enter the frey of the Prem whilst spending nothing yet again. You Will shortly return to your rightfull place yet again as your directors make the same mistakes as last time.

Blackburn Rovers spending back in the days of Jack Walker was £100million+.

He spent over £30million on the football ground and training facilities alone. He bankrolled extravagant signings year on year, and he paid obscene wages over many, many seasons. The fact that you don't know this shows how uneducated you are in general football terms.

In this day and age, in terms of the demand pull inflation of the world of football business, which incidentally is completely different to the core inflation comparison on which you base your figures (taken I suspect from your googling of inflation figures from 1995), would put that spending somewhere in the region of £500million, given the equivalent cost of a player such as Alan Shearer for example. Do you really see a 30 goal a season England international striker being bought for £5.5million in the Premier League today? Your "calculations" are simply nonsense.

I suggest you go away, calm down and then look into getting yourself an education, because you've just made yourself look like a moron.

Correct, but you also need a Premiership team to stay there, sorry, but you haven't got anywhere near one. I will enjoy Rotherham, and the rest because we will be winning, you on the other hand will be watching defeat after defeat. Enjoy.

Neither club have covered themselves in glory this pre season Scamp. But let's wait and see.
Out of curiosity what do you honestly think your chances are given the squad strenghthening this close season? As a Burnley fan can you honestly say you are happy with the quality of your signings.
Like most honest Clarets fans I wasn't happy with the sum total of signings at the beggining of last season (what with Charlie boy leaving so late on). But hey, look what happened. We haven't finished signing players yet, the window doesn't close till we've played 3 PL matches and lone signings are possible.

Quite agree. Scores like at Preston and Bury are not the main issue. However performance is an issue and Blackburn are not performing at the moment and it must worry Bowyer. Regarding Reid his record on injuries in very poor and it makes me wonder about the signing. Still time will tell.

Yes see your points Scamp but wouldn't it have been better to get your main targets in first rather than the squad players you've signed to date?
I honestly think that you need to up your bids a bit if your club is serious in bringing in some quality players to try to keep you in the Prem.

I don't agree that its all about keeping players fit as they don't want to retain that attitude against Cardiff,we need to start scoring goals against these teams to indicate to both the players and the fans that we are an attacking force. The fact is we seem to persit in missing the target you cannot do that if you have aspirations of being a Premiership player as each chance is few and far between there.

You must know that is not a fair comparison, players cost a lot less then and costs all round were much, much lower. Also you must surely realize that Burnley have not been handed a cheque. The money will come in over and at the end of the season. But next season when they are still there then they can spend.

To be fair, that post was just aimed to wind up the troll school kid...

I know about the costs back then, because I was around back then with being 31 years old... and I have seen the progression of the game and spends... Not like the troll who was just an itch in his dads ball bag back then.

He comes on here with wild claims to knowing how much was spent at our club, who earns what, which players are going to be sold (without a doubt we've sold JR about 6 times now), the fact we are going to be in administration and extinct by the end of the season... As a blackburn rovers fan living down south I get very angered coming on these pages. 95% of the comments are rovers/burnley fans having childish, meaningless arguments each side with its own statistical victory. I want to hear the REAL opinions of the fans who went last night, how did Rochina play? How were we tactically? Does Lowe look comfortable at right back?

Instead of constructively talking about all things blackburn rovers these pages are filled with the most laughable arguments. Are you genuine fans or just on here to squabble with burnley fans?

For the record I'm pro Bowyer and pro Rochina.
Here's hoping Cairney is the new Tugay.

I only said yesterday that this was the first time in a while that we weren't "going into a season with a raft of injuries" . Hope the injury hoodoo doesn't hit us once again
BTW... There will probably be a few finishing black and blue at weekend after Sparky's lot have finished with us.....lol.
Watching them on Tuesday on what was a fairly gentle training session the only player who left the field prematurely was Gestede.

They all wear bio sensors (heart rate, blood pressure; etc) these days which monitor them while training, Gestede looked ok but one of the staff signaled GB from the touchline and he came off immediately.

We also played two games yesterday, a closed door one against Fleetwood, I believe a couple of trialists played in that as did most of the guys left behind for the Bury game.

At this point in time it's all about giving people game time and I am pretty sure that GB knows what his lineup will be for the game against Cardiff.

Not too concerned about illness or injury at this stage, it happens a lot more than you would realise when you step up training, it all depends on how quickly you recover from the illness that matters, as I said, Gestede looked great until he was called off.

And I'm sure you would turn down a homegrown millionaire benefactor who could deliver the same for you. I think not.

It doesn't matter how you slice/dice it. The facts are BRFC did win the PL.

Football is full of rivalry and if you examine how it has gone between Rovers & Burnley in the last 20-30 years the Burnley dans distaste of Blackburn success IS tainted with jealousy. If it weren't they wouldn't give a stuff.

No Rovers fans have ever forgotten how fortunate we were to enjoy some amazing times. We understand that time won't come again.

Learn to find the TRUTH (as much as it may hurt) about why it pains you so much.

I don't like Burnley BUT I was able to recognise you deserved to gain promotion. The table never lies just as it didn't in 1995 (Walker's millions or otherwise).
