Portugal trip will bring us together, says Rovers boss Bowyer

BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer believes a week training in the red-hot heat of the Algarve will make his closely-knit squad even tighter.

The Rovers players are four days into their warm-weather camp in Portugal and if it was their manager’s intention to put them through their paces in testing conditions then he has certainly got his wish.

MORE TOP STORIES:

Temperatures have been hitting the mid 30s but Bowyer has been delighted by how his squad have responded to the challenge and the growing bond between them.

“We’re having double sessions and, as you would expect on a camp, the lads are working very, very hard,” said Bowyer, speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph from the Algarve.

“They are getting better and better in terms of their fitness levels but also in terms of the patterns of play that we have been working on.

“As I have said previously the shape and condition they kept themselves in over the summer has enabled us to crack on with the football straight away.

“We’ve worked on our shape and in the 11 v 11 games we’ve had, the lads have looked very impressive.

“But most pleasing has been the spirit between the players. They are getting tighter and tighter and that is going to be vitally important throughout the season.

“We’ve had a good few days so far and now we’ve got to finish it off properly.”

Jason Lowe, Tommy Spurr and Chris Brown all missed Saturday’s pre-season opener at Telford United, which Rovers won 4-0, with knocks.

Midfielder Lowe has resumed full training but defender Spurr and new striker Brown are yet to fully recover and, as things stand, they are unlikely to be risked in Wednesday’s friendly at neighbours Accrington Stanley (7.45pm).

“Lowey has trained every session since we’ve got here, which proved it was sensible for him to sit it out against Telford,” said Bowyer, who expects Spurr and Brown to return for the trip to Bradford on Saturday week.

“Tommy’s getting nearer to coming back into the main group and he’s looking very strong in running while Chris is dipping in and out and getting nursed along,” added Bowyer.

Transfer-listed duo Leon Best and Jordan Slew were the only senior Rovers players to be left out of the trip to Portugal.

The out-of-favour forwards have been left behind at Brockhall in case they are subjects to bids from other clubs.

It is understood that Best, who was on target against Telford, has been attracting interest.

But as of yet Rovers have yet to receive a firm offer – either for a permanent or loan deal – for the 27-year-old.

I hope Jason Lowe 's description will soon change from 'midfielder' to 'right back'.I've signed up for another season ticket with genuine optimism but if Jason Lowe is part of the midfield four for our first game of the season then we can forget pushing for play offs or automatic promotion as clearly GB is blind to his limitations in that role and will carry on picking him to play there regardless. That said he is the best option we have for right back and did well playing there in the past so let him make that position his own.

Baptiste is now our best option for right-back and I expect him to start there against Cardiff.

i suspect any loan deal for keane, or for other possibilities might have to wait for the transfer window to close. it could be that clubs would look to see if
a) a player like keane can make the step up to their own first team
b) a player like best can be sold for a fee, rather than a loan

for example, if someone was asking to take best on loan from us, i'd imagine we'd give some other clubs the opportunity of a permanent deal before accepting the loan. he's not in bowyer's plans.

i agree about the need for defenders, but maybe (in the light of FFP) we should trust the likes of henley, olssen, song'o and o'connell etc to deputise? our starting back 4 pretty much picks itself:
Baptiste / Kilgallon / Hanley / Spurr . bowyer likes a settled side it seems, so i'd expect to see these guys picked for most matches, unless injured. injuries at CB are the biggest headache. if one goes, then the options are o'connell straight in, or baptiste into the middle and send one of quite a few others out to deputise at RB - including arguably our best RB, jason lowe!!
bringing keane back would be good, but possibly not essential.

The only problem I have with that is if you are going to gamble so much ensuring Rhodes stays ( it's only a gamble from FFP point of view not the scoring of goals) then we may as well gamble on a couple of quality defenders. We can't rely on the attacking players to be getting 2,3 or 4 goals every game. If we keep tight at the back we will win plenty of games by the odd goal and come the end of the season that will be important. If you look at the games we should have won since Christmas last season that ended up a draw or defeat we would certainly have made play offs if we had a more mean defence.

We absolutely need a solid right back, Baptiste is not good enough
in that position, he played both left and right for Bolton last season
and was poor on both sides, read the Bolton fans forums.

He does have talent, but not as a full back at this level, not bad going
forward and scores a few good goals.

Funny cos on every Bolton online forum not one Bolton fan thought Baptiste would start their season as anything other than a bench warmer and the most common word they used to describe his defending was "calamitous" so how can he be good enough to be starting the 1st game of the season for us?

Personally I think its blindingly obvious we need to sign at least 1 more right back but if not I would start Lowe there and Baptiste on the bench.

We are massively short of numbers and quality at the back and if we are serious about a top six finish we have to strengthen - it is weaker than this time last year as we had Kane and Dann instead of Baptiste.

Spurr, Olson, Hanley, Killgallon, Baptiste and Henley - thats not a large enough number to play 46 games in the championship and we need to reduce the number of goals we conceed by about 23 (if we want to have any chance of top 3 or 4).

More (quality) signings are needed urgently, a Bolton reserve aint going to replace Dann properly.
