Jordan Rhodes joy at new deal as Blackburn Rovers boss backs striker to come out firing

This Is Lancashire: Jordan Rhodes has signed a new deal with Rovers Jordan Rhodes has signed a new deal with Rovers

PROLIFIC striker Jordan Rhodes has handed Blackburn Rovers a massive boost ahead of the start of the new season by signing a new contract tying him to the club until 2019.

Rhodes last night put pen to paper on a two-year extension to his existing deal to the delight of Rovers supporters.

MORE TOP STORIES:

The 24-year-old, who had three years remaining on his contract, has scored 53 goals in 96 appearances since making a club record £8m move from Huddersfield Town in August 2012.

Rhodes said: “I’m delighted, I’m very happy.

“It is a fantastic football club and I’m very lucky to be here.

“I enjoy coming in everyday and to have an extension of two more years on top of my current contract is a real bonus.

“I was delighted to sign it, it is a club I enjoy playing for.

“The fans have been great ever since I’ve come in the place and I’ve just thoroughly enjoyed it so I’m delighted to be here.”

Rhodes was named Rovers’ player of the year in his debut campaign at Ewood Park after netting 28 times.

He followed that up with a further 25 goals last season as Gary Bowyer’s new-look side finished two points outside of the play-offs.

And his manager is expecting his star man to go from strength to strength having had the chance to recharge his batteries.

Rovers boss Bowyer said: “I’m really excited for Jordan Rhodes.

“He’s had a good break this summer, something he didn’t have last summer as he was away with Scotland until the first week in June.

“We will certainly reap the benefits of that.”

Talks with Rovers’ two out-of-contract players, left-back Markus Olsson and midfielder David Dunn, remain ongoing.

But it is understood that fans’ favourite Dunn is edging closer to signing a new deal.

One player on his way out of Rovers is versatile midfielder Josh Morris after he re-signed for Fleetwood Town on loan.

Morris, who can also play left back, will remain with the League One new boys until January 3.

The 22-year-old spent the final three months of last season on loan at Fleetwood, helping them win promotion with a play-off final win at Wembley.

Morris, who signed a new contract with Rovers last season, scored two goals in 17 games for the Cod Army and was named the League Two player of the month for April.

Fleetwood boss Graham Alexander said: “Josh made a great impression on everybody last season.

“He is very popular with all the players, he is a good footballer, a fit lad and he is motivated.”

Good Deal for us, at least we know Rhodes actually is playing for the club!

The best part of all this is the reaction it has caused from the Dingles!

After months, no years, of telling us we would have to sell Rhodes to cash in and reduce costs with FFP around the corner, Venkys have done the complete opposite and shown real commitment and determination to keep the clubs best asset by extending his deal.

Meanwhile down at the pigsty Premier League status and £120 million sees Burnley going for world-beaters like Marvin Sordell, Matt Gilks and Lukas Jutkewitz, all of whom are Championship rejects, and have failed to land their 'big' targets of Bryson, Dawson and Deeney.

Never mind, at least they have a new tunnel and have painted the seats!

Despite everything that has happened these last few years Blackburn remain a club determined to hang on to their better players and are willing to pay the price to do so.
Despite a scarcely believable promotion Burnley remain a club unwilling or unable to spend significant money and consequently face a yearly battle to retain players and cannot lure people away from Watford or Derby.

It's all positive at Ewood at the moment. Unlike our dearest neighbours who seem to be trying for the prize of the having most inept and laughable signings and preparation of any club promoted to the PL. Why hasn't Ings signed yet I wonder?

I'm sure not one Claret will respond to this post, as they know it's all true

This can be nothing but positive for the forth coming season. Great news!

My only concern with this, and i hate to sound negative but does anyone think there is a minimum fee release clause in this contract?
If so how much?

Don't forget this 'star' from Tamworth. I must admit they're showing true ambition here, I mean, it was only last season they were raiding Jarrow Roofers for goalkeepers!

Even when you have a bit of good news 90% of your posts mention Burnley, you obsessed and jealous scruffs.

Rhodes has realised that nobody else wants him so has conned Venkys into increasing his weekly wage to £40k + - unbelievable, such ambition shown by a guy that has been dropped by the worst Scottish side in living memory.

All Rhodes' goals fired you to a high point of EIGHTH last season, wow what a player.

See you next year, oh sorry, we won't, I forgot you support Blackburn, where mediocrity matters.

I dont comment on here very often, more of a watching brief and to laugh loudly at the inane comments from our unfortunate six-fingered bretheren at the Turf. I have however noticed a distinct lack of ambition from the Dingles, they are quick to rub our noses in it that they have £120 million to spend, what I dont hear very often is how they are going to take the PL by storm and better the record that we set with a relatively similar amount of money. I never hear how they are going to finish better than forth and second in their first two seasons before taking the title.

They seem very content to scornfully comment on the rebuilding project that is currently ongoing at Ewood, without any mention of their intent for the next few seasons. Maybe the reality that they are going to be one season wonders has been accepted and that, whilst they appear to hold the high ground for one season, they are content to bombard our threads with unintelligent and stereotypical drivel.

Just an observation, I await some less than intelligent retorts.

The British record transfer fee received when you won the league was £7 million - it is now £80 million so lets gets some perspective you dimwit.

Its great news - like you say - keeping your star striker is definately going to be the best signing we make this summer.

However, I must pull you up on 1 incorrect "fact" you quote.

Venkys are not showing any "commitment and determination" by this signing as ultimately it costs them NOTHING.

Venkys put NOTHING into BRFC, what they do is put cash into the club and then add this to the DEBT the club owes them. That is unlike what happened under Jack Walker - he simply GAVE the club money.

You may think I am splitting hairs but I am not. There is only 1 reason that Venkys "debt load" BRFC rather than simply giving it to us and that can ONLY be that they intend to recoup this money back at some point in the future.

This is why we must try to balance our books as we are just becoming more and more indebted to Venkys - who will want that money back someday.

Its great for our promotion push that we can keep Jordan but acording to my sources (I heard this over a week ago and posted on here about it before the story broke) that he had demanded either a £15,000 per week raise or he wanted to leave.

Can a club like Rovers really afford to pay any player £50,000 per week ? - possibly if we go up this season.

Also, no one has comented how the other Rovers players will think about this - yes, obviously they'll be happy we've kept our best player but these are PROFESSIONALS - can we really expect Conway, Gestede or Cairney to be happy that Rhodes will now earn approx 5 times more than them - I very much doubt it and I expect all of them (and possibly Hanley as well) to be banging on Shaws door also demanding a large pay rise (just a thought).

Yes, I understand relativity, do you though? Why on earth would you make that comparison when 20 years ago you could buy the world's top player for less than you paid a League One club for Jordan Rhodes?

Do you understand the word Inflation - here is a quick definition for you in case you are struggling:

Ambition - ha ha, well, we managed to get in to the Premier League unlike you boys, is that ambitious enough for you? Do you think paying £50k a week of money that you can't afford to a player that really doesn't do enough to play at the top level shows ambition? Or does it show stupidity and a distinct lack of knowledge about FFP?

Speaking of ambition though what about Rhodes' ambition? No other Championship club will ever match his wages, so his transfer value is almost irrelevant. And no Premier League club will ever sign him as he has neither the pace or power to play there. He's fairly hopeless at leading the line or playing up on his own, even in the division below.

Fair do's to him though, he's an old school poacher and he's going to make as much money bumming around in the 2nd division as a lot of top flight players will at the highest level.

But his signing for Blackburn shows a distinct lack of ambition to me, he is just following the pound signs.

Calm down fool, keep going on about the Premier League. You're their temporarily unless your directors take it seriously and sign some proper players capable of keeping you there. You lot are in for a massive shock.

Does the season kick off tomorrow? Phew just as well it's six weeks away which gives us plenty of time to improve our squad.

How's your squad improvements going - Chris 'The Lump' Brown and Reg Varney? Wow, no wonder you are so confident of promotion with those two big guns added to your mid-table squad.

Are you Alastair Campbell in disguise? You are swerving the issue over and over again. You obviously have no real ambition to replicate your more successful neighbours achievements which to me is an acceptance that you will always be the poor relations in this rivalry. Finally you are talking sense, must hurt though to accept your circumstance.

Have to admit I have been one of the Venky's biggest critics in the past, but I am now starting to believe they have been taken for a huge ride by certain people and have be as big a loser as the fans.

Fair play to them for their actions over the last 12 months, now its time for us to back them and the team and see where it takes us.

I saw enough in the second half of last season to make me feel very positive, and after boycotting during the Kean era I started to enjoy my trips to Ewood.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Obsessed? It's you that spends half of your miserable life on the Rovers pages, you penis!

well what do you expect ? they will still be in shock but we knew all along Jordan was going to sign an extension to his present contract.
