FORMER Wanderer Stig Tofting had his fair share of World Cup experience when he twice sampled the greatest football show on earth with Denmark.

At the 1998 tournament in France the tough-tackling midfielder was an unused substitute during a victory over Saudi Arabia and a draw with South Africa.

He finally tasted some action when he came off the bench in the final group game, but it was not a happy experience as his side suffered defeat to France.

Tofting was not selected for the 4-1 demolition of Nigeria in the last 16 but was a half-time substitute in the quarter-final exit against Brazil.

In 2002 as a Wanderers player he was in the squad for the tournament in South Korea and Japan and played a more prominent role.

He started every game as Denmark qualified from their group as champions with victories over Uruguay and France and a draw with Senegal. Denmark were eliminated at the last 16 stage by Sven Goran Eriksson’s England who beat them 3-0.

Tofting made 41 international appearances in total and scored two goals.

Five months before the 2002 World Cup he joined Wanderers from Hamburg for £250,000 and made 17 appearances before returning to Denmark.
