KENNY Dalglish hopes Blackburn Rovers will be inspired by the 20th anniversary of the club’s Premier League title triumph next season – rather than being weighed down by history.

Dalglish was the manager when Rovers incredibly won the title during 1994/95 campaign and the club have already started a year of anniversary celebrations by handing out 20 ‘golden season tickets’ to fans.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph about his memories of Rovers’ Premier League glory, the Scot has also made clear that he hopes the club can enjoy success again soon.

Rovers will be attempting to find a way back to the top flight next term, after dropping out of the Premier League in 2012.

Dalglish is happy that the club have decided to celebrate the anniversary of the 1994/95 season and has urged the current squad to use that history as a positive.

“They shouldn’t see what we did as a noose round their neck,” insisted the 63-year-old.

“The club should be very proud of that history and try to finish as high in the league as they can.

“I hope they do well.”

Rovers handed out their first golden season ticket on Tuesday morning, which boss Gary Bowyer awarded to nine-year-old fan Matthew Spencer.

The club have also selected five more golden season ticket winners after asking fans to nominate people who deserve the prize.

Rovers received around 400 nominations in less than 48 hours, and are now contacting the winners of the tickets.

Fourteen more golden season tickets will be given out before the start of the season, with details to be announced in due course.

Dalglish thinks it is right that Rovers mark the 20th anniversary of 1994/95, when the club pipped Manchester United and the rest of the traditional big city clubs to the title.

No club of Rovers’ size has achieved the same feat since, or even come close.

Dalglish is currently a non-executive director at Liverpool after a second spell as manager at Anfield between 2011 and 2012, but he will always hold great affection for Rovers after four years as the club’s boss.

“If you can’t look back and enjoy those achievements, there’s something wrong,” he said.

“They should enjoy it. It was a great achievement and I know the fans enjoyed it at the time. They were great, they supported us so well and it was a dream for them.

“It was a fairytale.”

Rovers winger Josh King could make his second appearance for Norway in the space of five days when they host Russia in a friendly tonight. Norway lost 4-0 in France on Tuesday.
