Rovers goal-getters can shine, says Mick Rathbone

This Is Lancashire: Jordan Rhodes Jordan Rhodes

HOT-shots Jordan Rhodes and Rudy Gestede will fire Blackburn Rovers into the top six next season.

That is the verdict of former Rovers defender Mick Rathbone after he saw the strike duo lay waste to Championship defences at the back end of the campaign.

Top scorer Rhodes and the rapidly improving Gestede net 39 goals between them in 2013-14 with 17 of those strikes coming in Gary Bowyer’s side’s final unbeaten 12 games of the season.

That run of six wins and six draws was not enough for Rovers to gatecrash the play-offs.

But Rathbone, who watched a number of the games as part of his role as mentor to Manchester United’s U21s stars, has no doubt they will improve on that position in 2014-15 thanks mainly to their prolific front pairing and the management of boss Bowyer.

“With Gestede and Rhodes Rovers have really got a cutting edge now,” said Rathbone, a former physiotherapist at Preston North End and Everton.

“And I think the difference between the teams at the top of the Championship and the bottom of the Championship is the ability to put the ball into the back of the net.

“Rovers have that so I think they will do well next season.

“Gary Bowyer did a great job this season. He faced the firestorm and steadied the ship.

“It’s nice to see someone with common sense and it seems things are sorting themselves off the pitch as well.

“I think Rovers will be one of the six best teams next season.”

The reason for Rathbone’s reappearance at Rovers’ matches was Michael Keane.

Keane scored three goals in 13 appearances during a highly successful two-month loan spell at Ewood Park.

And it was Rathbone’s job during that time to keep tabs on the England U21s international, who he hailed as a ‘brilliant signing’, as well as the other United starlets out on loan in clubs at home and abroad.

With Keane returning to Old Trafford it is unlikely Birmingham-born Rathbone will get to see as much as Rovers next season.

But they will never be far from his thoughts as he has made Blackburn his home after a well-loved eight year spell in the blue and white halved shirt from 1979 to 1987.

“I first came to Rovers on loan but once I signed permanently and started going out with a Blackburn girl, who was a Blackburn fan and whose dad played for Blackburn in the 60s, and once I got the DNA in me, that was it,” said the former no-nonsense full back, who scored two goals in 306 appearances for Rovers.

“This is my town now – I sound like a mafia don! I am a Blackburner.

“My kids were born here, my son played for the Blackburn town team – this is us.

“I changed my passport recently and it said child of Birmingham but it really should have said Blackburn.”

And Rathbone, who was the physio for the England U17s side which won the UEFA European U17s Championship in Malta last week, ensures there is a bit of East Lancashire on United’s Carrington training pitches.

“One of the young lads at Manchester United, a very good young player called Liam Grimshaw, is a massive, massive Burnley fan.

“Sometimes I join in training and I’ll say to Liam, ‘this is it lad, Blackburn versus Burnley’.

“And he’ll say ‘come on’ even though he’s young enough to be my grandson!

“Every time we have banter when it’s an East Lancs derby. He personifies everything about it – it’s his life, it’s his everything, as it is to us over here.”

Predictions for next season:

Positives:

- Rhodes and Gestede form a dynamic goal scoring duo.
- Conway and Cairney to add to the goal scoring tally.
- GB makes more astute additions in the transfer and loan windows

Negatives:

- GB to make same substitution mistakes as last season, trying to hold onto a point or not losing instead of going all out for the win.
- Hanley to continue being a liability.
- Etuhu to be injured again.
- Nobody comes in for any of the six released.

Unknowns:
- Transfer window business.
- FFP (though I'd put money on it not affecting us till Jan 2016).

if last season was about stability then this season has to be about improvements. I think our starting 11 will prove to be a force to be reckoned with and GB can take a lot of the credit for that. I still have my reservations on his ability to turn around a bad game though and REALLY hope he has learned from last season's mistakes.

12 games unbeaten is ok. But if you want to be a serious promotion contender, it needs to be wins and not draws you have to be satisfied with.

It's going to be an interesting season and for me it can't start soon enough.

I believe even QPR are looking forward to playing you according to Sir Joseph Barton - At home of course, nobody in their right minds would WANT to travel TO the Turd. I can't see Rhodes going this summer, Everton and any other top flight team might try to stir things up a bit, but when we look at things realistically, we don't need to sell him and no premier team is going to come in and pay full whack when they can buy elsewhere like Burnley for cheaper. Gestede has only just come on to the books, as with other of our highly promising players for the next season, so we can be quite happy in the knowledge that we are going to pretty much keep the team we ended last season well with!

Quality was brought in by GB and consistency came at the end of the season, the consistency should carry on into next season, so I have bet £50 on rovers to top the league! Bet 365 are offering 6/1 on promotion and 20/1 to win outright... Nice £1000 back and premiership footy 2015/16!!! :)

On what planet do Blackburn Rovers not need to sell? You have to recoup about £25million this season to fall in line with FFP, of course your most saleable asset will go, to think otherwise is just plain delusional.

I think its safe to say you've just lost £50.

Is that an acknowledgement that Burnley will retain their Premier League status next season?

After the mauling we gave the "superstars" of QPR this season I doubt they are looking forward to playing us. Barton as a player and as a person isn't even worthy of comment.

The fact of the matter is that Burnley FC are Premier League and no amount of whining or crying can change that.

2015 Bonleh will keep their pl status - just.

Rovers will go back up and after another fierce derby year in 2016, when Roverd prove once again this years derby win was nothing more than a Venkys related fluke, we will watch the "Mighty" Dingles return to obscurity in a season where the Ginger Barry White moves on after losing d'ings and Tripper and watching helplessly whilst the Directors "upgrade" their bank balances, attendances drop to less than 8k as crowds revolt to the stupendous season ticket prices and to the weekly kickings by superior teams enjoying the free points.

Nice to see the Rovers wish list is still growing by the week... it now includes Burnley losing their manager, losing their star fullback, losing their star striker and player of the year, the Burnley directors turning on their club Venky-style and stealing all the money, Burnley attendances magically dropping to 8000, and the most far fetched of the lot, Blackburn Rovers being promoted. LOL!

That's quite a list. Do you have it pinned up on your bedroom wall and do you say a little prayer before it each night?

I suppose being a Blackburn Rovers fan all you can do is dream, the reality of the situation is far too painful. I imagine you'll be quite surprised when Burnley finish in a healthy position next season while your own team has been ripped apart by FFP. I won't.

Nice article actually if people could be bothered to read it before posting their usual obsessive bile.

Baz is well respected in football and no wonder. His book is a terrific read if you are of a blue persuasion (Rovers and Everton) especially, and far exceeds the recent book from Sir Alex.

The way things are set up, a top 6 is achievable, on the evidence of the run-in just gone, with one or two improvements.

Rhodes and Rudy can be a special partnership. Talk of Rhodes going to Everton as a replacement for Lukaku is obviously from an individual who does not watch football.

Looking forward to new season already.

As always RTID.

Not true Steven, not true. According to my cleaners husband/cousin - who's a massive Burnley fan (well he's got the mini-kit in his Montego) Rovers aren't going to have one single player next season.
And your wage bill would still be one of the highest in the division!!!

I've not read the book yet but after reading some reviews online I've just purchased it off some Brazilian website.

As for our strike partnership, I doubt there'll be many better in the Championship next season, provided we keep hold of Rhodes. That said, if the club recieved an offer that they really couldn't turn down, I have enough confidence in Bowyer to unearth another gem. Granted, they might not be as clinical as Rhodes but, as Gestede has already proved this season, there's more than one way to skin a cat.

Just can't handle the unpalatable truth can you?

Good at dishing it out but you can't take it can you?

Ings and Trippier will be gone long before Rhodes because they are both good enough to play in the PL and want PL salaries and contracts that reflect that.

To keep them Burnley will have to offer them the upgrade, so what about the rest of the squad? Not going to be happy if they don't get their cut are they?

That's how it all starts to fall apart.

Not going be an awful lot left out of the massive £16 million transfer kitty either is there?

The Burnley board however won't want to loose out, that's why they haven't invested any of the potential earnings from the coming season in keeping season ticket prices down.

Truly shameful way to treat loyal fans especially when looking at the offers made to Rovers fans, there really is no comparison is there?

If we go up next season people who buy season tickets this season will have a 75% reduction in prices, Rovers will bear the cost.

Burnley fans have to pay a £100 waiver up front, what a joke.

Anyone remember a certain Rishton Red who graced Rovers posts a couple of years ago, when we were in the prem, claiming to be a united fan?
Well here we have him in his super carrot costume. That's what trolls do. If there were a lot of posters on the Burnley pages, notsosuper carrot, aka, rishton red would be on them too posing as a Rovers fan. I imagine that he or she goes on other sites too, purely to get a reaction.
There needs to be a sign that says. Do not feed the trolls.
When a troll fails to get a reaction, it usually turns to the tactic of changing user name. This is an act of desperation and is usually found out quickly by real posters.
The troll can't really do any harm if not taken seriously. A troll will contradict everything said on pages and can cause upset and anger if taken to heart. I find a little humouring is a nice little titbit to feed a troll and keep it as pet.

Yep! He asks on what planet do we not need to sell Rhodes, then claims we have to recoup £25m to 'fall in line' with the love of his life (FFP)... But yet fails to understand that FFP just stops us making transfers in January, that is ALL it does! Haha! Everyone at Rovers are shaking in our boots at the thought!! We will NEVER be able to fall in line with FFP this season, selling Rhodes or not, so selling him would be an idiotic thing to do if we can't replace him. He also fails to recognise the fact that if someone does buy him this summer, with what is left on his contract we will be getting full whack for him, then GB just picks up another promising player to fill his boots, just like he has in other areas on the pitch, only for cheaper... Which if anything, will reduce the FFP problem that Rovers really are not taking as seriously **** this little cretin.

Dingles, read and weep, we don't care about FFP this season, it won't really do anything to us (apart from no January transfers, WOW)... Next season we should be falling in line with it with the way GB has set up the team/wages etc... So go find something else to tug over you fools!

Oh dear. You really are in for a shock.

The transfer embargo is neither here nor there, it is simply a sanction put in place to ensure that action is taken. In your particular case the necessary action is to REDUCE YOUR LOSSES in line with the rules, not simply serve the transfer ban and then carry on as before!

Until your losses are REDUCED to within the allowable limits the transfer ban will remain in place. Your losses for the last accounting period were £36.5million with a 136.1% wages to turnover ratio, a completely unsustainable and precarious position to be in. It's not a case of selling Rhodes if you feel like it, you HAVE TO SELL him to reduce the wage bill. The transfer fee received will go straight in Venky's pocket to balance the additional £8million deficit from the reduction in parachute payments for 2014/15.

The level of intellect from the no-dads these days is simply embarrassing.

Your club is now being FORCED to comply as you have broken the rules that other clubs have adjusted for over the last 2 seasons.

The savings you will have to make could be upwards of £25million given your horrific wage bill. This is not a quick fix, and regardless of all the PR talk about new contracts and signing players you will not be able to spend on transfer fee's or contract renewals without paying the price.

You will realise this soon enough.

STAYING DOWN FOREVER..... LOVE CLARETS.x

LOVE CLARETS.x Super_Clarets

"...but when we look at things realistically, we don't need to sell him"

On what planet do Blackburn Rovers not need to sell? You have to recoup about £25million this season to fall in line with FFP, of course your most saleable asset will go, to think otherwise is just plain delusional.

I think its safe to say you've just lost £50.
lol thick as a plank
