Boss Bowyer does not get the recognition he deserves, says Rovers ace Cairney

This Is Lancashire: Tom Cairney Tom Cairney

BLACKBURN Rovers’ newly crowned player of the year Tom Cairney believes boss Gary Bowyer would have been given the credit he deserves if he was a bigger name.

In his first full season as a senior manager Bowyer has built a new team and transformed Rovers from relegation strugglers to play-off hopefuls.

Cairney is full of admiration for the job the 42-year-old has done.

But the talented midfielder reckons his understated boss is worthy of wider praise.

“I really do think that if a big-name manager had done the job he has done here he’d be getting more praise than what the manager is getting at the minute,” said Cairney, who has proved to be one of Bowyer’s best buys.

“I feel like he deserves a lot of credit – and so do his staff.

“They have brought so many good people to the club and, from when I first arrived in the summer to now, it’s a totally different team and set-up.

“So I think the manager deserves a lot of credit.

“He has helped Blackburn turn the corner.

“I feel the fans are starting to believe and I feel they can see we have done everything we can to win matches and get into the play-offs.”

Rovers missed out on the top six by two points despite winning their final game of the campaign at home to play-off bound Wigan Athletic 4-3 on Saturday.

The victory stretched Bowyer’s side’s unbeaten run to 12 matches and meant they finished the season having suffered just four defeats in 23 Championship games in 2014.

Cairney, who completed a £600,000 permanent move from Hull City in January after an impressive initial loan spell, was absent for three of those losses with an ankle injury.

And he said: “It was tough watching but when I sat in the dressing room I knew we had the quality.

“We’ve certainly shown that in these last 12 matches and we all can’t wait for pre-season now. Roll on July.”

After picking up his player of the year award Cairney scored a dazzling solo goal that set Rovers on their way to a third straight win for the first time since January 2008.

After picking up possession midway through the Wigan half the 23-year-old danced past two would-be challengers before stroking a cool finish in off the post with his unfavoured right foot.

It was Cairney’s sixth goal of the campaign and one which would have been in the running for Rovers’ goal of the season – Jason Lowe’s stunning 25-yard strike at home to Middlesbrough in November – had it beaten the deadline.

“I think I need to go and get Lowey as I need to get his trophy off him,” joked Cairney.

“It was a great goal to score but I need to get as close as possible to the goal to score when it’s my right foot, so I had to keep going.”

A manager who leads a former Premier League team to 17th and then 8th in the Championship, a third successive and financial crippling season in the 2nd tier and into a humiliating transfer ban for FFP non-compliance effectively keeping them down forever.... and yet the fans class him as a "top man", you really couldn't make it up!

Superb job Agent Bowyer. You are fast becoming a Claret legend to rival the likes of Agents Kean, Berg and Appleton. You've kept them down once again but given them just enough hope to stick with you for another season. Top man.

So, honest question...
do all those so called supporters that were slagging off Bowyer about 5 games a go and were taking delight in saying they "we're only 2 points better off than at this stage last season" and "we definitely wont get in the play offs" and "Bowyer is tactically naive"...
do they come on now and say, "sorry I was wrong and i made an idiot of myself", or do they still truely believe everything is crap and only getting worse?
Come on guys, be honest with yourselves!!

You are really setting yourself up for next season Dingle as we all know you are going to be the whipping boys of the Prem, could i also ask if you are ever going to comment on your own team? Who are your targets? Where do you need to strengthen? How do YOU think you will fair in the Prem, you are getting so predictable and boring with your comments, come on you do understand dont you?

"...as we all know you are going to be the whipping boys of the Prem"

And how do you know this? You all thought we'd be the whipping boys of the Championship this season and how wrong did you get that one?

I comment on my own team daily, like most Burnley fans I use the Claretsmad forum, I simply come on here to laugh at you morons with your desperate claims that FFP isn't really happening, and that you're still a big club, and that Burnley didn't really beat you. It's comedy gold.

To answer your question I think we need to bring in 5 players, GK cover, centre back, centre midfield, wide player, striker, in addition to tying up Michael Kighty on a permanent deal. The basis of our team is as good as several of the lower half Premier League teams already and so a few sensible additions and good use of the loan market would give us a good chance of competing next season. I see us achieving a stable position in the Premier League next season and surprising one or two of the bigger teams along the way.

Most importantly we have Sean Dyche who is capable of moving Burnley onto the next level, and that's the part that scares you the most.

For those who really care about what happens at Turf Moor perhaps a comparison of Bowyers first season as Rovers Manager with Dyches first season at Burnley in the same division would provide some context.

Finished where ? With how many points ?

While Bowyer had more time to prepare I would suggest that he also had to work in a high profile chaotic shambles while Dyche slowly slid into a quietly run settled little environment.

Hope Venkys appreciate just how much GB has done in turning the club around.

i don't often comment but on ever thread you are first to comment or near enough first.

1. Why are you trolling the rovers thread when your team has just been promoted to the premier league ? is there no thread for you to go and comment on with a picture of your team on an open top bus celebrating with no trophy to show the fans ?

2. I have a vivid picture of what you may look like, sat in your parents basement with 3 eyes, a deformed hand with 6 fingers and no teeth, playing phantom of the opera waiting for the next rovers post comes on.

Because I don't like Blackburn Rovers, and I find it amusing to give back a little bit of the stick I have received over the last few seasons. If you are in any doubt that Burnley fans receive abuse you need only to search the articles for a game that Burnley dropped points in or god forbid lost. You would then see that said article is infested with delirious slavering no-dads with semi's getting themselves worked up into a frenzy that their rivals haven't won a game... it's hilarious to say the least.

I posted a few weeks ago a collection of the Blackburn fans early season thoughts and opinions as regards the prospects of Burnley to highlight this very point. The hatred and bile posted by certain Rovers fans is shocking....

The hatred and bile posted by certain Rovers fans is shocking....
fair play, i don't check the Burnley threads as iv no interest in how they are doing or news on Burnley in particular, so i have not seen those. I just see your comments plastered all over the rovers news.

French Rover says...

Cairney is spot-on about Gary Bowyer. The manager has had to manage a club in its worst position for almost half a century. When he took over as manager almost half of the squad were overpaid prima donna footballers taking all and giving nothing and the lot were either not good enough or had given up trying. Bowyer has sorted the squad out, got rid of some (but not all yet) of the non contributors and brought in (mostly) some very decent players at some very reasonable/bargain transfer fees. Not only has he transformed the squad/team - from one that was looking likely to go into freefall and drop through the leagues - to a side that ended the season on a 12 match unbeaten run and almost make this seasons play-offs. Outstanding.

Plus he has done all this in an atmosphere of doubt and disdain about his capabilities as a manager, even from the clubs own fans. So many Rovers fans were quick to criticise any setback or loss without looking at the bigger picture - which showed that the club had stopped the freefall down the table and were actually (slowly but surely) moving forwards once again.

It`s been a long tough season for the club, the manager, the players and the fans, but where there was desperation at the start of the season, and the last two years or so, now the outlook is much brighter and there is renewed hope for the future and rising expectations for success on the field next season.

Yes, FFP may hit us hard later next year, and we can only hope that our owners show us that they will back the club financially. One thing is certain though, Gary Bowyer hasbuilt (and is still improving) a squad which is surely worth backing again.

unfortunately that is one of the consequences of managing our club.
Our fans have been a pessimistic lot since I first started going in the 60's
I have even heard them moaning about Daglish's tactics when we nearly imploded before the title win and championship promotion.....
By the way Dingles.... that is Premiership Title winners I mean!!!!

Not the first to heap praise shall we say...
that combined with owners that dont know their proverbial backside from their elbow when it comes to running a football club or a business from the look of it....
However by hook or by crook the current team are in place and are starting to move us upwards.... so can we try and get behind them.... its amazing what a bit of support can do....
Anyone who has been to Selhurst Park this year and I happened to be in London for a month and went their would confirm ..... their support was immense when bottom of league.....and the evidence is their for all to see now.

Amen. Hope ALL rovers fans will get behind the club next season. For the 1st time since allardyce was sacked we are starting to look positive again. Personally I'd like to see a few more from the academy given a chance if we do get hit with ffp. Anyone know who is the next youth star? Heard food things about robbie cotton but nothing since last year.

I've said it all along, I think you can win the thing. Dyche is going nowhere and why would he?
He's on time and half on Saturdays, has a 57 plate Mondeo Ghia club car, a refurbished laptop and a brand new Nokia 106 phone. Rumor has it, after the open top bus parade, which resembled as scene from Planet of the Apes, the club awarded Dyche a water resistant digital Casio watch.

Which other Premier League club could possibly match that?

He'd be crazy to move.

Meanwhile, we just have to accept we're going to be relegated by Christmas, with Shebby Singh taking over as player manager.

The answer is nobody. Please stop criticising the individual signings and/or results, because his good signings have far outweighed the bad so far and because every team has a few bad results scattered amongst - that's football. Bowyer's record of signing players on low wages has been superb - you can be stubborn and try to cling on to your negative opinions, but it just makes you look daft, to anyone that actually understands the game.

Well if your getting a semi on about Kightly then you really are all excited aren't you, that kid has never done it in the Prem and found his level with you lot this year. You totally deserve to be where you are no question and I have already said as much, however your comment basically says strengthen everywhere you spanner ha ha ha. Names names please, targets you know, tell you what get your Playstaion on and check FIFA just to help you out Son, once again i will say it, just keep giving it the big one but we will gave a field day with you lot next season.

.......... and so on and so forth.
Captain Contradiction strikes yet again!

For each of those comments you copy & pasted, there are probably more than fifty from yourself, citing relegation for the last two seasons, the sale of Rhodes in every transfer window, Shebby Singh for manager, administration by the end of last season, administration by the end of this season, etc. It's been pointed out to you on numerous occasions but you conveniently seem to forget it every time.

You're hardly Nostradamus yourself so why do you continue to post your daily predictions, as well as your constant contradictions and hypocrisies? On another thread you claim you predicted Rovers going bottom-up in 2015 over a year ago, and say it wasn't because some Rovers fans made comments about Charlie Austin leaving. Seeing as you've been making equally ridiculous predictions long before Austin left for QPR, I fail to see why you even bothered mentioning him. If anything, those posts relating to Austin were probably in retaliation for all of your 'unfulfilled' predictions pertaining to the whole of our preceding season.

You're not on here in retaliation for a bit of stick, you're on here because your hatred of Rovers far outweighs your love for Burnley. A bit of senseless banter doesn't lead someone to spend every waking minute of their day posting on a rival team's thread, using multiple accounts as to lend some support to their own pointless argument. Just because a few Rovers fans post some rubbish on Burnley articles when they lose, it is in no way an acceptable excuse for you to spend all day doing what you do.

You pretend to be smart by using the occasional big word, or copy & pasting the FFP rulebook into your posts, but if you were even 10% as clever as what you think you are then you'd know that what you're doing is just a pathetic waste of a life.

I can only assume that your sister left you to pursue a Blackburn Rovers fan.

.......... and so on and so forth.

I was right, only Matt having the balls to defend himself and yer more bilge from our resident idiot.

In answer to Matt I would say the GB's stock has risen significantly over the last few months, the results against Yeovil and I suppose Sheffield Weds not withstanding.

Yes he was too negative in the early stages, but we can't see what is going on behind the scenes (we can guess from the reactions of players like Best on social media), we don't know what he was having to deal with.

Tactically naive? Again, he was and to a certain extent still is, but he is learning, but the greatest transformation came in the January transfer window, look at the players he brought in and how they have gelled.

A long way to go but GB gets my vote for another season.

Honestly? I still think its pretty obvious he was tactically naive at times during the season and failed to get points against teams that came to Ewood to frustrate us. Also sticking by certain players abit too long when in poor form. We missed out by two points - two points we threw away in various games this season by poor team selection / an inability to react during games / sitting too deep when leading.

I will say again, I am not one of those banging drum for him to leave, however by the same token I do not think he is the second coming. I am eternally grateful for the job done by Bowyer and his team in stabilising the club but is he the man that is able to take us up? I just dont know.
