Blackburn Rovers boss hails Tom Cairney wonder strike

This Is Lancashire: Tom Cairney Tom Cairney

GARY Bowyer lavished praise on newly crowned player of the year Tom Cairney after his breathtaking solo goal set Blackburn Rovers on their way to a thrilling 4-3 home victory over Wigan Athletic in their final game of the season on Saturday.

Cairney, after picking up the ball midway into the Latics half, danced past two defenders before firing in off the post with his unfavoured right-foot.

And Rovers boss Bowyer said: “If that was in the Premiership or that was abroad there would be re-runs of it all night – there probably will be in Tom’s house!

“It was a fantastic ability and to put it in with his right foot as well.”

The Championship player of the month Rudy Gestede then took his tally for the term up to 13 with a well-taken double before top-scorer Jordan Rhodes netted his 25th goal of the season to ensure Bowyer’s in-form side made it three straight wins for their first time since January 2008.

But, with Brighton & Hove Albion triumphing at Nottingham Forest and Reading drawing at home to Burnley, the win was not enough for Rovers to finish in the play-offs.

“Our objective was to win the game first and foremost,” said Bowyer.

“One or two people were saying what the other scores were at half-time but I wasn’t interested – I just wanted to win the game.”

Before the match Cairney was presented with his player of the year award.

Jason Lowe received the Peter White Memorial Trophy after his stunning winner at home to Middlesbrough in November was voted goal of the season.

The award is named in memory of former Lancashire Telegraph Blackburn Rovers reporter Peter White.

Pity for Tom for had he played a central midfield role all year he would have walked into the "Select" Championship side.

Highlight of the season for me seeing him being awarded the player of the year award and crowning off yet another fine game with a great highly skillful goal.

Did Burnley? Come to think of it have Burnley won anything meaningful in living memory? Thought not. Enjoy making up the numbers next season.

Hopefully GB will see what a difference Tom makes when he plays central not out right. Supported by Evans and two wide men - Conway and Marshall (or King) - they create a midfield to be reckoned with. Surely Lowe and Williamson will struggle to get a look in with this line up of four? Roll on next season

Hi dallydally

If Lowe was at Right back first game of the season I would not be to disappointed as for Cairney how many goals would he of added for us in a central role this season.

He even scored on his debut I think it was way back on that fateful evening at Carlisle in the cup albeit a deflected goal from a shot outside the box.

When Jim gets upset and flies off into a rant he gets confused.

Jim says we will never see the FA cup at Burnley or win it. He then goes on to remind us that Burnley won the FA cup in 1914.

Well come on Jim which one is it, will Burnley never win the FA cup or have to wait until 2114 to win it again? Just think Jim, by then Blackburn Rovers might just about have complied with FFP and be able to sign a few players.

Oh Jim, me old fruit. The nearest Alzheimers clinic beckons for you old son, as we have established already, Burnley have won the FA cup, and I'll let you know, even though you'll probably forget in the next 10 seconds, that Burnley have also won the countries top division title, some time ago admittedly but never the less they've still won it.

Keep up please Jim.

Maybe your constant and persistent drivel is driving him and many other rovers supporters mad.

Or maybe he just can't seem to get his head round the fact a Burmley fan would want to consistently post on a Blackburn rovers thread.... Every day without fail. Even though nobody is interested in what you have to say.

Or maybe he is just confused as to why you want to be sat at home watching the thread instead of celebrating the fact that Burnley have won promotion, after all you haven't stopped talking about it for the last two weeks but why not celebrate it. Not many Rovers fans are that bitter about it as you have had a top manager do a great job with some decent players. So coming on here with your usual drivel isn't going to antagonise rovers fans into your low level of 'banter' if that's what you can call it, no it is only going to make them feel sorry, as I do for such a lonely human being who's sole aim in life is too ensure that Blackburn fans all know of Burnleys biggest achievements in years... Promotion to the premier league. Try staying there for a couple of years this time yeah mate.

LOL @ jim 2012, a more uneducated no-dad we've yet to see on these pages.

If I may, Burnley FC have a proud history Jim, having won both the top division in English football on two occasions and the FA cup, as much as it hurts you to acknowledge it. We've also reached the Quarter Final of the European Cup, something you clowns can only dream of. And we have achieved this success WITHOUT a rich sugar daddy funding extravagant signings for us. We have done every thing the right and proper way which makes our achievements far more meaningful and respectable than yours. You bought your recent success and now you have to pay the price for it with a humiliating transfer ban. Shame on you.

We also have an unbeatable record against you goons in the East Lanc's derby, having dominated you with 10 wins and 2 draws in 14 consecutive league games, a record never to be equalled. It's all there in the history books Jim, have a look for yourself.

We've also smashed all manner of historical records this season, not least handing you lot a tubbing at Ewood Park, and then following it up with a 93 point season and automatic promotion to the Premier League and a £120million jackpot.

So then Jim, perhaps now is the time for you to wind that filthy pencil neck in, show a bit of class, and acknowledge your position as the inferior team in this little rivalry, like so many of the decent Rovers fans have already.

We are in the Premier League and there is nothing you can do or say that will change that. Your level of desperation makes even your fellow Blackburn fans cringe.

Keep looking up Jim... we in a different league to you lot.

What's the trophy for that he's holding? Did Blackburn win something this season?
Did Burnley? Come to think of it have Burnley won anything meaningful in living memory? Thought not. Enjoy making up the numbers next season.

Back on topic - well done Tom, true class.
Yes they did you bell waft. It was called PROMOTION.
Sorry to disappoint you but Burnley didn't win promotion, they earned it. Leicester earned promotion too but, in addition, they also won the title.

Reg Rover says...

Are the Rao family losing interest in their football club?

I ask because I find it strange that having visited Blackburn Cathedral on Thursday 17th April to meet the Queen, as she distributed the traditional Easter Maundy Money to her loyal subjects. All well-deserved recipients who had served the Blackburn community over many years.
But what of Balaji and Venkatesh Rao (pic above). What have they done to deserve their ‘Day In The Sun’ meeting our Monarch.
No doubt they were invited as the owners of our football team. But apart from paying a poultry £26 million to buy our famous club, what have they done for the town?.
Absolutely nothing only untold harm. Their presence at the Cathedral was an insult to the good people of Blackburn.
They have managed to take a well-run club and turn into a shambles. They have seen us relegated from the Premiership and incur horrendous debts. At the last count companies’ house had Venky’s of London (club owners) with debts approaching £100 Million and counting. Will the club even survive?. We do not know because they tell us nothing. They ignore requests from supporters and local media to speak to them. They refuse to issue any statements. They just do not communicate. They totally ignore us.
They are a disgrace. They even ignore Blackburn / Darwen Town Council who have repeatedly tried to engage in meaningful talks, regarding the future of Blackburn Rovers.
They even ignore their own Vice President Right Honourable Jack Straw MP.
And yet they joined the Mayor of Blackburn Councillor Salim Mulla, The Lord Lieutenant Of Lancashire and local dignitaries to meet our Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
Later Venkatesh and Balaji hosted a reception at Ewood Park. Cooked and supervised by Blackburn Rovers supporter and Michelin starred Chef Nigel Howarth, owner of Northcote Manor. I have known Nigel Howarth for many years and he is a top man, and keen Rovers supporter and deserved the accolade of cooking for our Queen.
Now a lot of people met and were honoured by the Queen on Maundy Thursday and all well deserved. But Balaji and Venkatesh Rao-I don’t think so.
The following day their team, Blackburn Rovers, entertained Yeovil Town at Ewood Park on Good Friday. Where the brainless brothers there? – NO. (unless someone can tell me otherwise).
Presumably flown back to India after their brief stay.
Why? – could they not have met with press, TV and Radio and given some meaningful interviews. Could they not have come pitch-side to say hello and try to build bridges. Could they not at least apologise for the dreadful mess they have got Blackburn Rovers into – NO. Nothing – Zilch.
Presumably back to Pune to concentrate on the career of Pop Idol Akon and the Indian Premier League with Pune. They are just not interested in Blackburn Rovers-that is clear.
Why do they not sell the club? They would not get a good price but maybe just maybe someone would buy who was interested in the club and it’s future. We are on the road to oblivion.
Although my contacts at Radio Lancashire and the Lancashire Telegraph tell me we are walking ‘on egg shells’ and my views are provocative, well someone has to be !. I'm told they could at any time ‘pull the plug’. Send Rovers into liquidation and rid themselves of the problem that is Blackburn Rovers.
That is ‘the dark cloud hanging above the club’. Our new Director of Communications Alan Myers needs to start COMMUNICATING.
The uncertainty of the clubs future and blasé’ attitude of the owners are effecting the attendances at Ewood Park and the future sales of season tickets. Communication is the key word. Do that and we can start to build bridges and then we will be delighted when our owners next meet the Queen.
