BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer believes it is no coincidence that his side’s impressive end to the campaign has coincided with the return to fitness of some of their walking wounded.

Bowyer has been hampered by injury for most of the season.

But he should go into today’s final game of the campaign at home to Wigan (12.15pm) with close to a fully-fit squad to choose from.

With winger Ben Marshall and midfield trio Jason Lowe, David Dunn and Dickson Etuhu back in training, full backs Tommy Spurr and Adam Henley could be Bowyer’s only absentees.

And he said: “Every football club at this stage of the season will be saying, ‘if only he stayed fit’, and we’re no different to that.

“Key players at key times have been injured for us but in the last couple of weeks we’ve had a couple back and that’s provided stiff competition which then in turn has produced the level of performances we have seen from the team.

“It helps as what it does do is drive the standard of training and the standard of the performances of some of the games we’ve played recently.”

Rovers’ 3-1 win at Charlton last weekend stretched their unbeaten run to 11 matches. That is the current longest unbeaten run in the Championship and the club’s longest since February 2011 when Graeme Souness’ side were heading for promotion from the First Division.

The current Rovers crop can still repeat the trick, via the play-offs, if they beat Wigan today and Reading lose at home to Burnley and Brighton & Hove Albion lose away to Nottingham Forest.

But Bowyer knows it will be a tall order.

He said: “We just want to try and finish off and try and get as many points as we can and see where we finish.”
