Paul Wheelock column: Regrets? Blackburn Rovers have had a few

This Is Lancashire: Tom Cairney and Michael Keane rue Sheffield Wednesday’s equaliser at Hillsborough Tom Cairney and Michael Keane rue Sheffield Wednesday’s equaliser at Hillsborough

NINETY eight days. That’s how long it is between the final day of this season and the opening day of the 2014/15 campaign.

That’s a hell of a long time to mull over any regrets.

No doubt the Rovers players already have a few.

The likes of Barnsley away, Brighton at home and, most recently, Sheffield Wednesday away were all massive opportunities missed.

But there will be more to add to that list if Rovers, who are now very much drinking in the last chance saloon, do not take their final shot at a top six spot.

As, going into the final four games of the season, the play-offs remain a possibility.

Admittedly a slim possibility, yet a possibility all the same.

And that is why Gary Bowyer’s side simply must pick themselves up after their hiccup at Hillsborough and take maximum points from their next three very winnable matches against Yeovil, Birmingham and Charlton.

Do that and they will better the points total Leicester achieved last season when finishing sixth (68) and, you would hope, leave them with something to play for against Wigan on the final day of the campaign.

But to do that they are going to have to bury the hoodoo that has hung over the club for more than six years.

You have to go back to January 2008 for the last time Rovers won three league matches in a row in a single season.

They have had five chances to do that this term – and never better than at Hillsborough on Saturday when they led Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 with less than 20 minutes play.

Many, including myself, have pointed to Jordan Rhodes’ miss four minutes from time as the turning point.

But on reflection, there was an equally telling incident in the lead up to Wednesday’s injury-time equaliser.

Michael Keane tried to play an ambitious pass out of defence when he should have retained possession or, at the absolute least, kicked the ball as far as down the line as possible.

It was a moment of inexperience that proved costly as, within seconds, the ball was in the back of the Rovers net.

You have to wonder whether it would have happened had the injured David Dunn been available to be brought off the bench like he had been in the 2-0 wins over QPR and Ipswich.

In those type of situations players of his experience keep the ball and help close a game out.

Are there enough of those players in the young and promising squad Rovers boss Bowyer has built?

Possibly not and that is something he may have to address in the summer.

But for now all the concentration must be on keeping this season alive. The summer is long enough already.

Baring a miricle we need to look back positively, 12 months ago we where the laughing stock of the footballing world, now we have turn things around what have we got.
We have a good championship side and hopefully we can add one or two this summer, make no bones about it next year will be GB last unless he gets us up.
GB has done an excellent job of turning us around but now we need to push on and next year GB has to do this or he will be out. This season has had its ups and downs but overall I have enjoyed it and I am looking forward to next year.

That is fantastic - all those pathetic Blackburn freaks practically willing and begging for Burnley's season to collapse in order to give them something positive in their world of awfulness.

And heer we are several months later about to confirm promotion to the league that they all wish they could compete in again, but sadly never will.

What a crying shame.

Long Live The Venkys.

One decent season and look at you. Desperation taken to yet another unparalleled level. Copying & pasting previous comments from months back is truly f*cking cringeworthy.

Burnley have done an absolute fantastic job, I look forward with interest to the Clarets 2014/15 campaign in the big league.
I hope they survive and our rivalry can once again lock horns in the top flight the following season.
The strides taken in the last 11 months at Ewood Park have been nothing less than miraculous, the change in and around the club in less than a year is nothing short of a minor miracle.
Venkys have learnt a costly lesson, thought they'd have pulled out by now, but thankfully they haven't and hope they stay in the background for another 12months so we can build on whats been achieved recently.
Onwards and Upwards, looking forward to next season already...now I haven't thought that for a least 3 years.

GB has done an excellent job of turning us around but now we need to push on and next year GB has to do this or he will be out. This season has had its ups and downs but overall I have enjoyed it and I am looking forward to next year.

It's hard to accept comments from the likes of these "alleged" reporters, firstly because we as fans can only comment on a forum from where the commentator does not respond... and 2nd because to the guy commenting "its a job" that is a million miles from paying your hard earned to support the team you love.... I posted the following the other night.... I believe its still relevant to this thread..... so here goes.... Before we go any further with inane talk about the playoffs, Rovers need a consistent team. The flaws in the defence are apparent to most other championship managers, and have been exploited on many occasions this season, also the over reliance on Rhodes, although to be honest Bowyer seems to have got to grips with that issue.
I believe that the assembled team (if we can keep hold of them) can really be a force in this league next season, yes, going up now would be great, but we would be up then down faster than a hookers drawers..... And although great financially, the reallity is when you drop you lose every decent player you have.... So right now I am happy to see us way above where we were this time last year, and with players that "want to wear the shirt" things might not be rosy, but we miles above the past couple of seasons.... Got to add that before anyone starts shouting that we only 4 points above where we were last season, i'm talking about stability, and players that actually put in a shift, and a manager that is blue n white through and through....

What is really strange is that only couple of days ago I was was having a genuine conversation about football with S_C The reason I stopped using this forum about 12 months ago was the stupid childish remarks being thrown around by both sets of fans... I never want to see B/burn lose to our neighbours, but at the same time, I cannot ignore the spectacular season that they have just had, and i hope that their luck continues, B/burn, Burnley, Bolton, B/pool, Wigan, can never again challenge the top 6.... but to just see an East Lancs club there is proof that money is not everything.... Belief in the shirt "whatever the colour" and a manager without 2 bob 2 rub together can still make the premiership, is proof that real football is still alive and kicking....

This is hilarious. After all the tripe talked by dingles about rover's finances over the last few weeks it's come hack to bite em on their hairy backsides. £7 million losses versus their turnover is a real club breaking scenario. For this village outfit meanwhile we have the backers and clout to pay our debts and make that push for promotion. So lap it up no marks yours season just gets worse

God bless the Venky's and their continued splashing of cash on our club. If we got promoted, as long as we had a decent manager, we would be staying up. That is the difference between a small east lancs club and a big one.

.......... and so on and so forth.
A quality review of the no- dads early season wet dreams.

karma is a wonderful thing.
Except it's not karma though. If it was then all the negative comments made by you Dingles over the last three seasons would surely have put the mockers on your team's promotion to the Premier League, no? Let's not forget the hundreds of posts from you lot predicting relegation - both last season and this season - the sale of Jordan Rhodes in the last three transfer windows, the supposed return of Shebby Singh, impending administration, etc.

At the end of the day, all Dole-queue_Clarets has done is sat at home all day long and used the benefit of hindsight to copy & paste some incorrect 'predictions' from Rovers fans who only wanted as equally bad things to happen to your club as you all want to happen to ours. (Actually, most of your lot would happily see Rovers fold which is a pathetic attitude to have.)

Probably the saddest thread ever on this site.

Just what is the more desperate behaviour ? The fact that someone devotes a slice of their life to creating a back catalogue of wind up quotes submitted here over many months, or, that they are prepared to then activate a number of their own multiple accounts to engage in a fantasy dialogue congratulating themselves on their 'achievement' ?

Such pathetic attention seeking really must be a cry for help, perhaps the LT could get Social Services involved ?

It actually takes very little time to type the word 'Clarets' into the LT search window, pretty much any given Burnley article is followed by a herd of desperate no-dads all trying their best to predict the fall of Burnley FC and the miraculous rise of the sleeping giant that is Blackburn Rovers.

It's just not happened the way you'd all hoped has it?

Enjoy the Easter weekend Mungo! The Clarets might be up on Monday.

There are some seriously deranged people on this planet, not all of them live in or support Burnley of course, Kim Jong-un springs to mind, but even he of the famous haircut wouldn't go to the extremes this idiot troll goes to.

It does all that simply to get a few abusive replies? Dear God.

Words fail me, they really do, and to cap it all there are still Rovers fans who reply directly to it's drivel, perpetuating it even further.

It really is beyond the comprehension of anyone with normal brain function.

I largely agree with this, though I am not in the 'let's get shut of Gary Bowyer' club. Though wanting tactically in some games, he has by and large steered the club through a very difficult transitional period. That we are close to the play offs is a bonus given the changes and we can all look forward to next year with a very positive frame of minds. COYBs
