FULL-TIME: Sheffield Wednesday 3 Blackburn Rovers 3

This Is Lancashire: Jordan Rhodes was on target again Jordan Rhodes was on target again

ROVERS missed a massive chance to move within two points of the play-offs as they let a two-goal lead slip through their grasp on a dramatic afternoon at an emotionally charged Hillsborough.

Gary Bowyer’s side looked to be heading for a third straight league victory for the first time in a single season since January 2008 when top-scorer Jordan Rhodes, Craig Conway and Michael Keane gave them a commanding 3-1 half-time advantage.

But they were made to pay for failing to build on their advantage in the second half as Atdhe Nuhiu bagged a brace – with his second goal coming four-and-a-half-minutes into injury-time – to earn Wednesday a point.

It is a point that leaves Rovers, who are now unbeaten in eight games, four points off sixth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion with four matches of the season to play, the first of which comes at home to relegation-threatened Yeovil Town on Good Friday.

The afternoon started on a poignant note with an impeccably observed minute’s silence to remember the 96 Liverpool supporters who lost their lives at the Hillsborough disaster 25 years ago.

After the moving silence Rovers boss Bowyer, who was in the Nottingham Forest end as a fan on that fateful day on April 15, 1989, joined his Owls counterpart Stuart Gray in picking up the wreaths they had placed in the centre circle and laid them in front of the Leppings Lane end, where the 96 died and hundreds others were injured.

One the action got under way it was unchanged Rovers who showed first as a quick pass from Keane found Lee Williamson, who laid the ball back for centre-midfield partner Jason Lowe to drag past the far post from 20 yards out.

Former Wednesday defender Tommy Spurr also failed to make a telling connection when a free kick found its way to him on the far side of the box in the 15th minute.

But, comically, Miguel Llera failed to clear the left-back’s scuffed attempt and Rhodes nipped in to side-step Chris Kirkland and tap the ball into the empty net from virtually on the goal-line.

It was the striker’s 24th goal of the campaign – and he won’t get an easier one.

The Owls had a golden opportunity to equalise four minutes later when Michail Antonio latched on to an under-hit headed clearance.

The livewire winger threaded the ball through to Nuhiu and the recalled targetman – in for the ineligible Leon Best, who was unable to play against his parent club – evaded Matt Kilgallon’s challenge before forcing a fine save out of Paul Robinson.

In contrast Robinson’s opposite number looked shaky in the scrappy opening stages with Kirkland spilling a Cairney free kick at the feet of Rhodes, who side-footed straight at the prone Wednesday goalkeeper.

Then it was the turn of Robinson to be called into action, half-an-hour in, as he made a sensational one-handed stop to turn Antonio’s goal-bound header over the bar from point-blank range.

But from the resulting corner Antonio flicked the ball to the back post where Lewis Buxton forced it home to restore parity.

Six minutes later, however, Rovers were back in front as a long punt forward from Robinson was knocked on by Rudy Gestede to Rhodes, who in turn played the ball back to Conway.

The winger had plenty to do.

But he made what came next look easy as he slipped inside on to his right foot and fired a low 30-yard drive past Kirkland’s despairing dive and into the bottom corner.

It was Conway’s fourth goal for the club since his bargain £100,000 January deadline day move from Cardiff City – all of which have come away from Ewood Park.

And it was another new addition who extended Rovers’ advantage two minutes before the break.

Cairney spread the ball out wide to Lowe who, having moments earlier made a crucial block in his own area, swung over a superb first-time cross into the heart of the box that deserved a goal.

And it got one as the unmarked Keane sent a flying header past Kirkland to notch his second goal for the club after signing on loan from Manchester United.

On a difficult pitch that made passing on the ground difficult, Rovers were right to go direct.

And, after Rhodes had a goal correctly ruled out for offside, it was a from a booming Robinson free kick that Gestede looped a header just over the bar at the start of the second half.

A clever Gestede flick then played strike-partner Rhodes in on goal.

But Kirkland spread himself to prevent Rhodes from nudging the ball past him.

Rhodes kept the ball alive, however, and after playing it across the six-yard box Gestede saw his close-range shot blocked away.

Then it was the turn of Rovers to survive a scare as Antonio raced away down the right and drove over a cross-shot which came back off the bar to substitute Caolan Lavery, who could not beat Robinson with the rebound.

But Robinson was beaten by Nuhiu in the 72nd minute.

The dangerous Antonio was the creator as he outstripped Keane down the left before lashing over a cross which Robinson palmed away as far as Nuhiu, who stabbed the ball home.

Rovers should have been out of sight.

But they were given another chance to seal the contest four minutes from time when good closing down by Conway resulted in Rhodes going clean through.

But instead of squaring to the better-placed Gestede, he dragged his shot into the side-netting.

It proved the defining moment of the match.

As in the fifth minute of injury-time Nuhiu crashed the ball home after Wednesday had seemingly being thwarted by some desperate and heroic defending.

And it could have got worse for Rovers had Robinson not denied the giant targetman a hat-trick with virtually the last kick of the game.

We may not of won today but we didn't lose. 8 matches unbeaten run is pretty good going given the circumstances and what's happened over the last couple of seasons.

I do have confidence though for next season if we can keep the majority of our players. GB just needs to sort the team out and tell them to stop lying down when we are in front, how many times this season have we either lost or drawn a game when we have been in front? That needs to be sorted for next season if we are to have any chance of promotion.

Today yet again we see the best and worst of Rovers over 90 minutes. Some awesome attack play that should have left us out of sight but conceding too easily at the back and at 3:1 up with 20 minutes to go GB yet again shows he has as much of a clue about responding to opposition's change in tactics as Steve Kean. Today was a massive opportunity to edge nearer the playoffs and we had done all the hard work yet ended up dropping 2 points. GB has done a fantastic job turning around the mess left by Kean and Shebby in relation to building a squad but it has to be questioned if he has taking the team as far as he can. If we counted how many points his tactical errors has cost this season we would be well in the playoff positions but our slim chance probably came to an end today. But we'll done to the team for some thrilling football.

Comedy. Absolute comedy.

Next season you'll be lucky to stay in the Championship after being pummelled by FFP. Never mind the quality of the teams that miss out this time which may include Derby, QPR on an all or nothing final push, Nottingham Forest who will throw millions at going up, Wigan, Reading, Watford, Ipswich, or the likes of the relegated teams which may include Sunderland, Fulham and Cardiff who will need to bounce back up at the first opportunity. Also don't rule out Leeds and Bolton who'll eventually get their act together.

No sir, your days in the big time are well and truly over.

We could of said EXACTLY the same to you at the beginning of this season yet look where you are.

I'm not too concerned. Lets be honest if a club like Burnley that averages 12,000 for home games, has a half wood - half scaffold ground and who's fans are obsessed by another football club due to decades of misery can by some miracle get in the big league then anyone can.
So true except the "anyone can" bit. And we don't care!

Don't expect a sensible response from little old David. He isn't very clever. He has just enough brain capacity to say OUT but really struggles with the concept of constructive suggestions.
Personally, I have stopped responding to him. There is no point. I don't even despise him any more. I just accept that he is a poor lonely little old man whose only contact with the outside world is his Amstrad computer and his limited vocabulary.

Also just to shoot you down in flames GB has said that the performance simply wasn't good enough.

So 27 attempts on goal simply isn't good enough for the manager, how many attempts are you going to have to score tonight? 2 if you change hands?

Seriously though, what have been missing all season are two strong, confident central midfielders and an experienced right back. Maybe a fully fit and motivated Etuhu can do one of the midfield jobs next season but Keane, Henley or Kane are not good enough at right back. If we can't find one to bring in for next season I suggest grooming Lowe for the role. If we can keep the core of this squad together and allow Bowyer to grow in confidence and stature we will be right up there.......next season.

Given the season we've had I don't think any Burnley fan can feel too down. It was simply one of those games, we bossed it from start to finish. It was in no way an abysmal showing, but then what would you know. You follow a mid-table side that can't hang onto a 2 goal lead over a poor Sheff Weds side.

We're still effectively 9 points clear with only 12 to play for. I'll settle for a promotion party at Blackpool, or even better at home to Wigan on Easter Monday. Admit it, you're filling your pants at the thought of us going up.

Totally agree, about 6 points short at this point in time and they were there for the taking over recent weeks but it hasn't happened.

I haven't given up just yet but we did need those extra 2 points today because that would have made people sit up and take notice, and we were so very close.

What a roller coaster ride this season, what a pity more aren't seeing it because GB is doing a great job in getting the right players with the right attitudes in place to give us that chance.

All the detractors seem to forget that there is always another team on the pitch that is trying to win the game as well.

How sad are you?

It's 11 pm at night and you are spouting your usual drivel on a thread that has nothing to do with you poxy little shed of a club and to cap it all no-one on it gives a flying feck whether you get promoted or not.

I on the other hand have only just had time to come on line after a busy evening in the real world, the last thought in my mind is going on any Burnley thread because I am a long way off the need to throw up.

You really are a sad little fecker aren't you?

I like that. I must say I'm quite bemused by all the flak on here. 3 goals away from home and it's quite clear the ship is turning. Sure it's disappointing to have lost some points but this season would be too soon, all that's wanted is to see heart and commitment and some entertainment. That, to me, is all there.

Seems to me there are more Dingles on here (a good few masquerading as Rovers fans). They are going too soon and so let them make hay while the sun shines. For sure it's going to p!ss down heavily on them in the near future and they know it................

So 27 attempts on goal simply isn't good enough for the manager, how many attempts are you going to have to score tonight? 2 if you change hands?[/p][/quote]I like that. TurfMoorTom

Wednesday caught us in the second half after substituing 3 players. We didn't respond with any substitutions until stoppage time and then our top scorer went off. Would King coming on in the 60th minute have put a bit more pressure on Wednesday ? We have sat back in the second half too many times this season and it has cost us. Gary needs to figure that out.

Exactly. All of us knew another Groundhog Day was about to happen. This has happened so many times under Bowyer. He fails to use his substitutions in a positive way when we are winning. He only ever seems to respond once we have conceded a lead or gone behind.
For all those still claiming things will be different next year under Bowyer please explain why:

1. He has been in football his entire life yet still seems incapable of positive substitutions when we are on top
2. He has been in charge for well over a year now, signed a couple of dozen players and we are mid table. Why will this change because it's a new season. How much more experience of repeating the same mistakes does it take?
3. He is about as inspiring as a Yorkshire pudding. Has anyone ever seen genuine passion from him? He seems too pally with the team to be a boss.
4. None sense spoken about us having a young side. We do not have a young side their ages are about average for a professional football team.

I have nothing against Bowyer but Like all rovers fans all I want is the best man for the job. Venkys won't recruit an experienced manager for fear of standing up to them or criticism so we are where we are with another coach incapable of taking us back into the premiership.
I hope I am proved wrong but I do wonder if those people on these boards who keep telling how good a job Bowyer has done actually go to Ewood. There are so few of us left I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

Excellent post - don't get me wrong, I think GB has done a very good job considering the circumstances but he is very limited in many areas and you are right, he has not learned after being in charge for around 18 months in total - he will be a steady coach/manager but I don't think he'll ever bridge that gap and make a really top one.

You are also right about many peope's over expectations for next season - which is prob understandable after the chaos of the last couple of seasons.

However, just because there has been progress (starting from a very low base) this season dosent automatically mean we will continue to improve next season.

I personally think that this Rovers team relies way too much on Rhodes' goals and Hanleys defending and if we lost either in summer (especially Rhodes) then results would suffer massively, as the amount of money we would have to replace them with would be minimal.

Also, we need to cut our costs massively this summer as we cannot continue to lose £20m per year, especially when we lose another £8m in TV money this summer - those kinds of saving can't be made simply by getting the "deadwood" off the books - decent players will have to be sold as well.

Also, if FFP is introduced (hopefully, we may get a stay of execution but if we do then we will still have to cut our costs massively, £20m losses per annum are simply unsustainable in the longrun unless we are happy ending up like Pompy and playing Stanley twice a season) then that would have a devastating effect on our ability to compete at the top end of the table (yes a few other teams, Bolton, Wolves and Forest would suffer the same embargo but then teams such as - the 3 that came down, QPR, Derby, Wigan, Brighton etc would not ) - that's quite alot of good teams to get past in order just to reach the play-off places when you have a transfer embargo.

if rovers want to go to the next level, next season rovers need to avoid desperately trying to hang on just to see a game out, it only encourages our opponents and gives them hope of getting something, when was the last time rovers stringed 20 passes without the other team getting a touch

Whilst Venkys own Rovers we have to be grateful for the job GB has done considering the last 3 seasons IMO.

Yes he's made some odd decisions, played players out of position, stuck with players week in week out despite poor performance, dithered on substitutions, prevented ''shutting shop'' when we've had leads against Brighton & Weds but what about coming back to draw against Watford and Millwall? What about the good performance against Leicester and Ipswich? What about Reading away?

The fact remains Venkys still own the club and whilst they are responsible for decision making we should just accept the fact we have improved from last season. I get what Dan & JC are saying but I just think the wounds are still too raw to start trusting Venkys, Shaw and the likes to start making such massive decisions again based on their appalling track record.

We need to give GB another full season, hopefully keep hold of JR and accept this season's been a good learning curve so we can make a serious challenge next season.

I just think some Rovers fans need to be careful what they wish for and remember how far we've come from that awful night against Wigan in the Prem under the drink driving bullsh*tter or watching the Sunday league standard football served up by Appleton......

Good post Dan.
After 21 signings and stability at the club we have amassed just 2 more points than last season.
Yes there are 4 more games to play, 2 at home and 2 away, but the truth is that we haven’t improved by very much.

Don’t forget, we couldn’t really have got any worse than last season with 5 different managers, Steve Kean protests, Shebby Singh, the court cases over Berg’s & Kean’s compensation etc., etc., and we still had 58 points.

The fact we are mid-table is solely because the teams at the bottom haven’t amassed as many points!

GB did a good job saving us from the drop and bringing some stability to the club but is he really the man to lead us to promotion?

Whinge whinge whinge - there were two teams playing yesterday and Wednesday were never going to lie down even though we were in a great position to take all three points. An Owls fan said we were one of the bestbteams he has seen this season and much improved from the away game he went to at Ewood. But he also said that Wed never give up and even at 3-1 down most Owl fans believed they could get a point. Once we can get over the dissappointment of yesterday then we should appreciate that we still have a team and manager who are on a steep learning curve but who are learning every game. There will be times when the lessons are hard and yesterday was one of those times. But we didnt lose - we are still on an unbeaten run and despite the doom merchants whinging about getting yet another manager (which will take us backwards) and being supposedly hammered by the Fair Play rules and oh yes we will be losing Jordan Rhodes as well - well we still have much to look forward to next season. We wont win the league but should comfortably make the play-offs!

The difference is that last season we were cannon fodder, may not be much difference in the points but the league positions and the performances are light years apart.

One other difference from last season is we were fighting relegation, this season we remain just four tantalising points off 6th place with four games to go.

You would think that's too much but in sport you never know, personally I now think we will be playing championship football again next season, hopefully with the bulk of this squad in place and the manager as well, more battle hardened and ready to make a more serious push.

We can't keep making changes to the management structure because some armchair fans (or fans in the stands) don't like whoever is in charge, rest assured if that happened there would be quite a few fans on the back of the new manager as soon as we let a goal in.

That's football for good or bad., better off sticking with the manager we have for another season.

At the end of last season Leicester fans were baying for Pearson's blood, look at them now, that's the example we need to follow now and not the panicky, knee jerk reactions of the past few seasons.

Yes poor but they were dead on their feet. The same 11 men hanging on for 95 minutes. ( forget the Varney sub). Wednesday put on 3 subs and livened up their game. Clearly I am still annoyed by bowyer for his lack of subs. It was desperate, frustrating and miserable watching the slow car crash that was their equaliser. I do have confidence though for next season if we can keep the majority of our players. GB just needs to sort the team out and tell them to stop lying down when we are in front, how many times this season have we either lost or drawn a game when we have been in front? That needs to be sorted for next season if we are to have any chance of promotion.
In other words we are not bossing games or taking them by the scruff of the neck. This team are still learning (the manager also) and need to learn how to do this. It took Leicester 3 seasons to get it right but look at them now.
I can't understand those who expect instant results from this team who have only been put together this season ???

Hello Wild Rover. There is no obsession with subs. Saturday's late comeback by a mediocre Wednesday side speaks volumes. Luck Schmuck. The goal had been coming, at one point late on Conway ran up the wing and simply ran out of steam only for the ball to be lifted off his foot with ease. He then stopped still hands on knees to recover. Fitness is perhaps a factor, but you are suggesting that GB should not use his substitutions are you? They are a key and integral element of matches and time and time again change the outcome. What I am saying above is that GB has proven inept at their timing and use over and over again.
I have patience but deep down we all know or suspect that GB just hasn't got it. I am not suggesting I have the answer as Venkys will no doubt do what they have always done. The wrong thing. Whatever it is.
