Cairney believes Rovers have potential to trouble Championship's best

This Is Lancashire: Cairney believes Rovers have found right balance Cairney believes Rovers have found right balance

RETURNING midfielder Tom Cairney genuinely believes Blackburn Rovers have the potential to become one of the top teams in the Championship.

But the 23-year-old, who scored on his comeback match against Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday, feels it will be next season before that is realised.

The 3-3 draw with the Seagulls all but ended Rovers’ slim hopes of reaching the play-offs.

Cairney insists they will not give up on sixth spot as long as it remains mathematically possible.

But he concedes it may be beyond them.

Cairney said: “I think the management staff have got to take a lot of credit for what they’ve done turning Blackburn around this season, it’s great to be part of and hopefully the fans can see that.

“I do think we’re on the verge of something. Obviously it’s more than likely going to happen next season but I really don’t think there are that many teams than better us in the division.

“Ask any of the boys, there’s only Leicester, at their place, who have outplayed us, especially in the first half, and they’ve run away with the league and rightly so.

“So I definitely feel we’re on the verge of something, it’s just that it’s more than likely next season.

“We are looking quite attacking,” added Cairney, who linked up well with Jordan Rhodes, Craig Conway and David Dunn.

“I’ve not played much with Conway as I got injured at Reading, which was his first start, but he’s done really well.

“It’s also always nice to play with Dunny as he’s still got a great brain.

“We’ve had 12 clean sheets but we’ve not had one since Reading and if we can just sort that out I’m confident we can score every game.”

Cairney, a £600,000 January arrival from Hull City, took his tally for the term up to four on Tuesday.

The former Scotland U21 international said: “Tommy Spurr did really well down the left, I was able to catch up with him, get to the back stick, and, with the foot I’ve not used all season, put it into the back of the net which was great.

“But it was bittersweet as the horrible thing is conceding late on and only getting a point from the game.

“The three goals we gave away were not the best at all. We felt comfortable throughout the game, they only had four shots and scored three, which is immensely frustrating.

“We’ve got to learn quite quickly from it because if we’d won games like these we would have been up there.”

Don't think they have found the right balance yet, if they had we would be chasing Leicester, but there is a significant improvement this season, hopefully more to come next.

And it was a cracking goal from start to finish.

Worth the price of a season ticket next season.

Oh dear, Cairney's comments won't go down well with the negative brigade of supporters.
A good young player talking sense and optimistic about the future of the club. Cue the conspiracy theories of propaganda.

True supporters will be at Ewood Park next season to support this young team that the manager has assembled giving it their all for the shirt.

Shame some Rovers 'supporters' don't do the same and get behind the club, rather than looking for any excuse available to not buy a season ticket.

What I dont understand on these message boards is why so many so-called Rovers fans are so negative all the time. Football comes in cycles, we have had our days in the sun and nobody can take that away from us. It is well documented what has happened since Venkeys took over, but it has happened so lets accept the present for what it is. For those of us who have been following the Rovers for ever, we have seen a lot, lot worse than we are seeing at present. Football has changed, players are mercenaries and clubs dont matter that much to them. If you are a fan and I mean a real fan where it is in your DNA, you take the rough with the smooth. We have no divine right to being a top club, maybe we will be again who knows. maybe as the doom mongers say we will go bust. Whatever happens support your team and stop moaning. What does that ever achieve? will it change anything-probably not. Cup half full please chaps. Feel free to send an abusive reply. Cheers all!

Spot on Jez, fans like DD are not real fans just moaners all the time, when we win or lose, I don't know why they bother.
I have seen enough this season for me to go down next year with real hope, but beware we are not guaranteed promotion we will have to earn and that's where the real fans can help, imagine being in the old Kop (I have been lucky enough to have) and Liverpool are 2-0 down, there fans get behind them till the end, pity DD can't go and watch Burnley and take a few more with him.

I don't have a problem with your comments although as a die hard supporter you seem totally unbothered as to whether the club will go bust or not at some point in the future.

As a die-hard fan I would have thought that no matter how remote, the thought of the club ceasing to exist would make you very unhappy.

As a fan I want future generations (especially from my own family) from east Lancs to enjoy supporting the club as much as I have.

Hi there
My point was aimed at the constant whingers on this site, who seem to revel in constantly having a go. No one likes bad times but we have to be pragmatic enough to get on with it. As for your comment about not being arsed about the club folding-you could not be further from my thoughts if you tried. Yes the spectre of that happening is unthinkable but lets try and build a little positivity on here Even when we win I come on these message boards and end up depressed with the "this was wrong brigade" Trust me mate I would be devestated beyond words if one of my greatest passions was taken away- my son is a season ticket holder too, so yes I want Rovers to continue well beyong my time. Be Happy!

What I dont understand on these message boards is why so many so-called Rovers fans are so negative all the time. As a die-hard fan I would have thought that no matter how remote, the thought of the club ceasing to exist would make you very unhappy.

As a fan I want future generations (especially from my own family) from east Lancs to enjoy supporting the club as much as I have.
Don't disagree with you on that JC, irrespective of what you think of me I am a pretty pragmatic person, I generally deal with issues that are facing me now and tend not to be concerned about things I can't have any affect on whatsoever.

Of course I am concerned about the future of the club I have supported most my life, 44 years and counting, what real fan wouldn't be? But unless I win the lottery I can't do anything about it..

Just like I can't do anything about global warming.

My daughter is 16, she has been going to Ewood since she was 5 and had a ST since she was about 9 I think, she loves it, and she is the next generation because it's in her blood now.

By buying our ST's we support Blackburn Rovers, for us it's as simple as that, I would argue that the stay away fans by not supporting the club financially are contributing to a self fulfilling prophecy regarding our potential demise.

Especially with FFP looming large.

But I suppose that if the worst does happen they will have the dubious pleasure of saying "I told you so".

Maybe some of them are Burnley fans masquerading as Rovers fans trying their best to destabilise the club.
