MIDFIELDER Lee Williamson says Blackburn Rovers must be ready to pounce once the teams above them in the Championship table slip up.

Williamson is certain the sides who are in the thick of the play-off race will drop points between now and the end of the season.

And that is why he is refusing to rule out Rovers, who are nine points behind sixth place going into tonight’s trip to his former club Watford, from claiming a top-six spot.

The 31-year-old knows the only way they are going to do that is by winning the majority of their remaining 10 games.

But he reckons Rovers will have a chance if they continue the attack-minded approach that has brought them a 1-1 home draw with Leicester City and 4-2 win at Huddersfield Town in their last two outings.

“We’ve had two good performances and now we need to carry that on,” said Williamson, who made 78 appearances and scored five goals for Watford between January 2007 and June 2009.

“We’re going into every game now looking for the three points.

“We’re not going to sit back and play for draws, we know we need to get three points to get ourselves up the table and give ourselves a chance of getting in the play-offs.

“I can’t see every team at the top of the table winning every game or not losing every game.

“There’s going to be twists and turns and we’ve just got to give ourselves the best opportunity.

“We don’t want to slip up so when other teams lose we don’t take advantage of it.”

Rovers remain rank outsiders to finish in the play-off places after a damaging run of three straight defeats preceded the badly needed victory at Huddersfield.

The fact that Gary Bowyer’s side have so far failed to win more than two matches in succession this season also goes against them.

Williamson said: “It was disappointing the three back-to-back defeats we had and we owed it to ourselves, along with the club and the fans, to get back on track.

“Like anyone in this league consistency goes a long way and if you can put a run together you can move up the table so fast.

“Wigan have done it, Sheffield Wednesday have won a few games and they’ve gone up, Derby didn’t start the season particularly well but then they changed their manager and won seven in a row and they’ve stayed at the top of the league, so it’s something we have to take note of and learn from.”

Rovers have struggled for consistency all season but proved on Saturday they can match the best the division has to offer by taking points off Leicester.

Of the performance Williamson said: “That’s got to be the benchmark for us now.”

Meanwhile, Blackburn Rovers have been allocated an initial 1,500 tickets for their Championship clash at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, April 12.

Tickets will go on sale to season ticket holders tomorrow with any remaining tickets going on general sale on Monday.
