Simon Garner column: Rovers moving in right direction

This Is Lancashire: Gary Bowyer Gary Bowyer

GOING into the final third of the season I think Blackburn Rovers are in a good position.

Slowly but surely Gary Bowyer is putting together the side that he wants, he’s getting his views across and he’s getting his players to play how he wants them to play.

With so many players coming in and out, it was never going to happen overnight.

That’s how it has proved.

But I definitely feel Gary is going about it the right way. He’s doing a great job.

On the pitch, there is no question that Blackburn are in a better place than they were a year ago.

Okay there have been a few disappointing results, games that they were expected to win but didn’t win, like Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham at home and Barnsley away, but that happens in football.

You can’t win every game – especially in a division like the Championship.

You look at the sides above Blackburn in the table – the likes of Leicester, QPR and Nottingham Forest – and there are some very good teams there.

It’s going to be hard work to get into the play-offs but I still think they’ve got a chance of getting in there. T

he secret to getting in there will be about consistency.

Rather winning one, drawing one and losing one, you’ve got to string a run of wins together now.

But as I say, it is not easy to do that in this division.

And even though Blackburn haven’t been able to win three or four games on the run yet, you cannot accuse them of a lack of effort.

They always give 100 per cent every game and in that respect you cannot ask for any more.

But I do think they have got a good enough squad, skill wise, to get in there.

And as long as they match that up with the undoubted effort they are showing, they’ll have a chance. Reading a week on Saturday is a big game and I think it’ll do Blackburn good to have a week off.

It allows the lads playing with knocks the chance to get over them and it will allow Gary and his coaching team to work on a few things, which isn’t easy to do when you are playing so many matches.

It would be great to get into the play-offs – especially for the fans.

After all that they’ve been through, they would definitely deserve it.

More absolute garbage from Garner.

"Going into the final third of the season I think Blackburn Rovers are in a good position."

You're 10th you clown.

"I definitely feel Gary is going about it the right way. He’s doing a great job."

I assume Garner's definition of a great job means mid-table obscurity and a manager with a disciplinary problem is acceptable?

"On the pitch, there is no question that Blackburn are in a better place than they were a year ago."

Blackburn are in exactly the same position that they were a year ago and look how that ended up.. same league position, same points, same excuses, weaker squad, more debt.

Is Eckersley playing? says...

Isn't it a pity Venkys didn't realise the difficulty of getting out of this league before they dismantled the club? They certainly know now. Repent at leisure comes to mind.

Let's not get too carried away about the quality of teams in this league Simon. Unless all the promoted teams were to spend in excess of £30m I doubt that they would remain in the premier league. I don't even think that there is more than a handful of players in this entire league that any Premier League team would covert.

I also hope next season that we can change the record of "we are moving in the right direction". I have said it, most fans in the comment's section have said it, the players and manager have said it, and every Rovers pundit on the radio and in print has said it. After this season enough, sick of hearing it. Next year is when we decide if the team and Bowyer are good enough. Can't see us going backwards.

Same position as last season and same points maybe - but a world away from there regards the future of Blackburn Rovers.

This time last season there was a big fear still of relegation and administration and absolutely nothing to look forward to.

Now we have a much better squad of players who want to play for the club, we are playing better football (most games) and we are looking to the play-off places and not the relegation places.

Quite a big turn around in a short time, so though the stats are the samme this IS a different club from this time last year. Onwards and Upwards loyal Rovers fans..

Its quite a while since we lost to Burnley, isnt it.
I havent just done an exercise that shows out average league position over the last 20 years and we are averaging 15th in the Premier League, Burnley are averaging 16th in the league below. They would have to finish above us 9 seasons running even to get within 5 league places.
Its not surprising they hate us so much, we are SOOO much better.

That is the absolute fact of the matter.
Regardless of what happens in the next derby game, it would take nigh on 40 years for Burnley to overtake Rovers in the stats tables.
To that end, most Burnley fans on this site know this fact, hence the vitriol and bitterness.

I am yet to see a Rovers fan READ an article about Burnley. Just like Accy Stanley, Bury, Rochdale - we don't view you as competition and won't for the foreseeable future.... sorry.....

Last season was a story of early luck followed by more decline and chaos, a very different story to this seasons slow start and steadily building a team that has been learning lessons.

As a supporter I know this season has provided some interest and entertainment, last season was almost all depressing and frustrating.

What will it take to make the playoffs this season, 75 pts ?

oh now come on, I know we havent lost to you for thirty odd years, but it would be harsh to think that we we have taken away Burnleys "last shade of dignity" every time we've beaten you in that thirty odd years.

Granted, that 5-0 win under Souness must have been probably Burnleys biggest dent on dignity in the last 5 years, but...lets not get carried away, beating Burnley hasnt exactly been rare for us, certainly not in my lifetime.

I cant remember, did we win on that day where Burnley fans were breaking off the asbestos and throwing it at other Burnley fans?

I remember it well, not for the violence but for the ridiculous penalty awarded against Kevin Hird that started it all. Not justifying it - we were in relegation bother and it was never a pen,
Fair to say that you have had the rub of the green in recent times with some very dubious decisions, olsens pen at Burnley, Dunn's offside goal last season, Williamson ripping down Ings at Burnley this seaso, as one friend said who is a Man U supporter," Why are you not allowed to beat them?" Looks like you will do almost anything to keep your precious 11 game uneaten run intact.
We have been extremely unlucky in recent games not to have got the result and had officials done their job properly who knows?
Of course I would love to win in March but thankfully it is far from the main focus of our season this time around.
If we turn in an away performance like the second half at Leicester or QPR (Minus the mistakes) you will no longer have your precious record.

I cant remember, did we win on that day where Burnley fans were breaking off the asbestos and throwing it at other Burnley fans?[/p][/quote]I remember it well, not for the violence but for the ridiculous penalty awarded against Kevin Hird that started it all. Not justifying it - we were in relegation bother and it was never a pen, Fair to say that you have had the rub of the green in recent times with some very dubious decisions, olsens pen at Burnley, Dunn's offside goal last season, Williamson ripping down Ings at Burnley this seaso, as one friend said who is a Man U supporter," Why are you not allowed to beat them?" Looks like you will do almost anything to keep your precious 11 game uneaten run intact. McClaret

This season is their equivalent of us winning the Premier League. No wonder they are getting excited. Poor bu****s have never know any success in their lifetimes. !!!!
You can keep clinging on to history but it wont help you on the 9th of March when we take away you last remaining shred of dignity and de-pant you in the most embarrassing way possible on your own patch. We finished above you last season, we'll finish above you this season. We're 2nd, you're 10th. Learn to accept it then you won't sound so much like whining old ladies.
