Middlesbrough v Rovers: How they rated

This Is Lancashire: Middlesbrough v Rovers: How they rated Middlesbrough v Rovers: How they rated

PAUL Wheelock rates the Blackburn Rovers players in the draw at Middlesbrough...

PAUL ROBINSON 9

Made five crucial saves to almost single-handedly ensure Rovers earned a share of the spoils.

TODD KANE 5

Replaced at half-time after being given a going over from Mustapha Carayol. Given little protection.

GRANT HANLEY 7

Breathed a sigh of relief after he nearly turned a second-half George Friend cross into his own goal.

MATT KILGALLON 7

Helped Rovers keep back-to-back clean sheets after coming under the cosh in the first half.

TOMMY SPURR 8

Wearing protective headgear after receiving nine stitches, the left-back was his side’s best defender.

JASON LOWE 7

Made some crucial blocks and interceptions as Boro went close to getting the goal they threatened.

TOM CAIRNEY 6

Only Rovers player who went close to scoring when he forced Shay Given into a save with his feet.

CHRIS TAYLOR 6

Won six tackles – more than any other Rovers player – in an attempt to stop Boro from winning the midfield battle.

DAVID DUNN 6

While not for the lack of trying, the midfielder was unable to exert his influence on the match.

RUDY GESTEDE 6

Volleyed a decent first-half opening past the post before playing most of the second half out on the right.

JORDAN RHODES 6

Apart from one half-chance that was blocked behind, Rovers’ 16-goal top scorer did not threaten.

He's angry at the club for pricing him out of a dream move to the Premier League in January and is now happy to pick up his vast salary until summer when he will leave for a much smaller fee now that his goals have dried up.

You can't keep a player who wants to go, this is proof. No goals in 8 and alarms bells are ringing. You should have sold him when you had the chance, Jordan Rhodes is now just another massive drain on your finances, nothing more.

Perhaps Burnley will give him the move he craves and a shot at Premier League football next season?

He's been found out, as been feared by many.
This is not a dig at the lad, its just that as a poacher he needs close contact with a beefy partner and that has not / is not happening.
He was always in need of finding more in his armour in order to 'move on' to be a more complete striker, this is why those speculative 'trade on' figures have not been realised and IMO never will be.
The only chance is, our team finding a good offensive midfield balance being found i.e. Evans? where a more direct approach from them will unsettle the opposing defence and give JR the space he needs (and is lacking ) to operate effectively again.

Jr has had a deep in terms of scoring but he did create a goal for rudy against derby. Am sure he'll hit a scoring streak soon - maybe having a strike partner has affected him a little.

On the plus side, we're defending well and a good unbeaten run away from home. Just need to sort out midfield! Hopefully
Evans will be back to it pretty soon and what a bonus having robbo in such good form.

Rhodes is going through a barren spell at the moment, IMO that's all.
As said above he's a poacher so give him the chances and he'll take them. It's up to the rest of the team to do their jobs and Rhodes will do his.

Yes you may have point there laughing boy as you will certainly need a striker to replace Ings whatever division you end up in, it also isnt doing Rhodes any harm having to do a bit more and come deep either, he is still a kid to be honest and will be firing again, hopefully against you lot next month. Look stop worrying yourself too much about Rovers all the time and enjoy where you are, i mean come on you have waited long enough Lovejoy!. There are no worries for us at all after what has happened recently and its onwards and upwards, just one step at a time. RTID

He is simply going through a quiet patch, every striker I have seen has them from time to time, all it usually takes is one to bounce in off a shin or whatever.

Are you sure?

What about the massive losses or the unmanageable debts or the transfer embargo or the extreme costs cutting, or the need to achieve promotion at all costs or your complete reliance for survival on a bunch of Indian Chicken farmers?

I think you are still very much on the slide, as your league position shows. It might be wise not to get too far ahead of yourselves just yet, remember Venky's can pull the plug at any moment and should they do that make no mistake Blackburn Rovers will be royally f@cked.

What's happened to the bounce right back to the prem brigade?
Looks like our rovers are doomed for another season in this lower div.
Only money can talk these days so come on Venkys and do a jack walker, buy a new manager, top of the tree, then give him loads a money to buy the best for blackburn rovers.its the only way forward?
If you can't afford it...sell up to someone who can, someone who can put blackburn rovers back where they belong. .. In the prem!

I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion however if 5 out of ten is an average score then my view is very different.

Robinson 9 - 3 Great saves. Saved us from getting comprehensively beaten and even Woodgate has admitted this.

Todd Kane - 3 Appalling defending. Great when playing the Blackpools and Barnsley's of this world at home, going forward but when asked to defend solidly he is out of his depth. I have yet to see him win a header from opposition goal kicks etc. Beaten far to easily. Allows incessant amounts of crosses to rain in on Blackburn goal. Too lightweight. I know Bowyers team set up does not help our full backs but Spurr copes because he is a physically adept defender. Todd is far to small and lightweight for the championship.

Henley - 6 Shored up the defence a little

Right Back is a huge problem for opposition coaches / managers are sussing us out and flooding play down our right side knowing that we are very weak there and Bowyer cannot see it

Grant Hanley 7 - Got his head to lots of crosses / corners 16 to Middlesbrough says it all.

Matt Kilgallon 8 - Composed defending. Tries to play a decent ball out of defence to.

Tommy Spurr 8 Lack of help on the left side whether Spurr Cairney - Spurr Taylor - Very weak flanks at the moment putting great strain on our full backs however Tommy Spurr seems to be able to handle it. Nothing spectacular going forward but solid in defence

Jason Lowe 5 - Defending role carried out well, however, never a penetrating pass all game.

Tom Cairney 7 - Kept our midfield moving forward under difficult circumstances

Chris Taylor - 7 Our Robbie Savage - Charges around tries to break up opposition attacks. 7 for sheer effort.

David Dunn - 4 The game passed David Dunn by Well below average contribution - Not worth his place and should have been replaced earlier. As against Barnsley he is a one half participant now.

Rudy Gestede - 9 Absolutely tireless running. Broke up a number of Middlesbrough moves from the back. Actually puts himself about for the team unlike Jordan Rhodes who has not broken one opposition move from the central back two down all season. No Alan Shearer / Kevin Davies. Rudy held the ball up when played up to him. Won so many headers to no effect for Rhodes did not read them or have the pace or anticipation to get on the end of any of them.

Bowyer shame on you for not putting Rudy in the Centre forward position and taking Rhodes off when Conway and Vardy came on.

Jordan Rhodes - 3 Totally and utterly ineffective - No chasing opposition down. The ball never stuck to him all game. Balls ricocheting off him all afternoon. Played no one in and was totally insignificant all afternoon and I cannot believe Gestede was replaced instead of him. Woodgate had Rhodes in his pocket the whole game. Rhodes is not even moving quickly across the front line to hel create passing options for the midfield

Is Jordan Rhodes immune from being left out / substituted. Totally unacceptable performance. Shearer

Second half Gestede played wide right and won so many ariel headers against George Friend their left back yet JR read / fed off non of them.

So disappointed by his attitude / Shearer Newell and Sutton harried for 90 minutes and prevented opposition attacks. Unfortunately Jordan Rhodes cannot sprint onto a ball / head a ball from goal kicks balls played up to him / chest it / hold the ball up / play as a number 10 and get midfield players involved / his art is in the box however our set up away from home is not conducive to this ever happening accept on the rarest of occasions Yeovil away.
