Leeds star Varney determined to make Ewood Park switch

LEEDS United striker Luke Varney has set his heart on signing for Blackburn Rovers.

The 31-year-old asked Brian McDermott to be left out of Leeds’ squad for their clash with Ipswich on Tuesday to avoid jeopardising a potential move to Ewood Park.

Varney had just forced his way back into Whites boss McDermott’s plans after a nine-game spell out of the team.

But once he became aware of Rovers’ interest he made his feelings clear to his manager.

McDermott said: “Luke spoke to me and felt he didn’t want to get injured in the game as it would have jeopardised his opportunity to go to Blackburn.

“He would have been in the team – what can I do? Each to their own. If he felt that way and someone says that to you, you can’t put them in the team as you can imagine.”

McDermott confirmed that transfer talks have taken place between the Championship rivals.

But Rovers are still waiting to seal a deal for Varney as Leeds battle serious off-the-field problems.

It has emerged that the group looking to take over the Whites is on the verge of withdrawing its bid.

At this stage it is unclear as to whether any deal to bring Varney – who is out of contract in the summer – to Rovers will be permanent or on loan.

But if the former Crewe, Derby, Charlton and Portsmouth man does man join Gary Bowyer’s side he will provide competition for Jordan Rhodes and Rudy Gestede.

Varney, who has scored 76 goals in 262 career starts, can also play out wide.

That will appeal to Rovers boss Bowyer after he lost Ben Marshall to suspected ankle-ligament damage.

Bowyer suffered a fresh blow on Tuesday when centre-midfielder Lee Williamson was stretchered off in the 2-2 draw at Barnsley.

While the injury is not as bad as first feared Williamson has been diagnosed with concussion – which makes him a serious doubt for Saturday’s home game against Blackpool.

Should the 31-year-old be ruled out of there could be a debut for new loan signing Bryan Dabo.

Bowyer said: “We’ll assess how Willo is but Bryan may be thrust straight into it on Saturday.

“Willo was not too bad in the dressing room afterwards. He was sitting up but he’s got a nasty whack to his eye as well so we’ll assess him and see where we go from there.”

Even if Williamson is fit he is not good enough to play at this level.
Quite simple Mr Bowyer we must win on Saturday so please play an
attacking formation as your recent team selections and substitutions have
been awful.

I hate to say it but I agree with you.

GB certainly has a blind spot, perhaps a little concussion himself when it comes to assessing the capability of Williamson at this level.

Can't see him forcing his way past Jordan or Rudy but he'll be ideal as a winger, good player at Blackpool.

Dingle - as I've said before, anything other than outright promotion for your band of cloven footed foot 'n mouth diseased Bovines will be failure. You've had your best start to a season in your entire history yet you'll still blow it because you're a joke. You're starting to slide away predictably because of the laughable level of investment your board duck time and again. Mainly down to your poor crowds. Is it any wonder no pundits talk about you? We all know what will happen...

This explains why you perpetually comment on Rovers stories because deep down you know you're sure to miss out on the top two spots, end up in the play offs and blow it in the first round.

You and your relatives sharing the same bed, sleep tight.

"Anything other than outright promotion will be failure".

Coming from a no-dad that's praise indeed, and indicative of how far ahead of of you morons we are in all departments. Nice of you to acknowledge that.

I can't imagine you thought that at the start of the season. We were amongst the favourites to struggle if not go down. Remember all the nonsense spouted by you clowns after Charlie Austin chose to treble his wages at QPR, you said it was the end for us, who will score your goals now you said? What a set of muppet's you are.

You pleasured yourself raw at the thought of finally climbing above us and restoring your battered confidence after a disgraceful first season in the Championship. And there you are STILL struggling in mid table.

How silly do you feel now Mungo?

Would missing out on promotion for Blackburn Rovers, given the financial implications and transfer embargo, not be classed as outright failure? I think it would.

Our season has been an immense success and deep down you know it. Sean Dyche is the best manager outside of the premier league and has turned the club around. To reach the play-off's would be a superb achievement considering the resources available, it would be the final insult to you and your kind, and the more you put down our chances the better we seem to do. We are a win off 2nd place at the end of January, and still competing for an automatic promotion spot, it might be wise to remind yourself of that the next time you are cracking one off.

I have two questions:

1. You were supposed to be above us by Christmas, what happened?
2. Why are we STILL 13 points ahead of you?

Honest answers please.

Perhaps if your criticism came with a proposal of something better, it shows you have applied some thought to the problem.

Otherwise you just become another Dingle Dave.

Or do you think another striker is not needed ? it's an interesting debate .

GB has probably looked at a number of players and Varney has probably got a whiff of his interest that's all.

I suspect that GB may have lost interest because of Varney's refusal to play the other evening, not exactly the attitude a potential new manager or club should be looking for, anyway time will tell.

Rubbish manager? lol.

Kilgallon, Spurr, Evans, Cairney, Gestede, Mahoney, not exactly bad players are they? And he has moved on 20+ players, either on loan or transferred out, who either need to pick up experience by having the chance to play regularly or don't fit into his plans.

Like the majority I will question his tactics and his substitutions, or lack of them, but at the end of the day he's keeping us within striking distance of the play offs while turning what was a car crash of a club around on a shoestring budget.

PS - If fans knew best they would be doing his job and taking the flack instead of dishing it out.

Good comment and also from Owd Nick re his refusal to play. Obviously wants to force his way out at Leeds and they will want to get anything they can for him before his contract runs out, especially for a 31 year old. He will be after a 2 year deal with you no doubt. Take him on loan so you can get rid in the summer if needed.

Chicken plucker - please don't mention the fact we sold Charlie to QPR. If that sale keeps us out of promotion then just how senseless and expensive will it prove to be. I know we did not expect to be where we are but to sell him to another championship club was a mistake, shortsighted and could prove very costly. Like you I hope Shackell sees him off on Sat as he did at home, but please don't believe everything BFC does is great, we make mistakes like every other club.

Then it was January, then March, and now you move the goalposts to the end of the season.... sounds to me like you are running out of excuses as to why you're so sh!te, much like Mr Bowyer.

The funny thing is all those years you clowns were waving your premier league erections around have now ended, and all that's left are a few twitching semi's on these message boards that come March will be fully floppy. I don't think you'll be wanting to compare anything after that.
I have a couple of questions for you... honest answers please.

Why do you spend soooo much time reading and commenting on Rovers related stories?

Is it because you are unemployed/on the sick and don't have any friends, so this is as close as you get to social interaction?

Please Ed, can we sort this out, leave us on our pages and the Burnley fans on theirs, surely you can block comments that will offend or are not relevant!

1 you win nothing at Christmas
2 your 13 points gap is pointless it will be of no use to you
if you do not gain automatic promotion
3 you are in the playoffs
4 if you do not win against Q P R you will be six points of an automatic promotion place and still in the playoffs

that will get rovers closer to the playoffs were we need to be

Sadly its a free world and a free press in this country but there are some Rovers and Burnley fans who can have a decent discussion and argument and mickey take without resorting to childish behaviour.

Very little if anything the editor or moderator can do I am afraid, if they kill the ID off they can just invent another one.

The only thing you can do is ignore the morons and talk around them, that's what I try to do.

It isn't a bad idea to go on the BFC bit and drop a couple of hand grenades now and then, it's usually a desert over there and it does liven things up a bit.

So we now have to wait until May do we? I thought it was before Christmas that you would be looking down on us? Then it was January, then March, and now you move the goalposts to the end of the season.... sounds to me like you are running out of excuses as to why you're so sh!te, much like Mr Bowyer. The funny thing is all those years you clowns were waving your premier league erections around have now ended, and all that's left are a few twitching semi's on these message boards that come March will be fully floppy. I don't think you'll be wanting to compare anything after that.
Haha could you be any more of a hypocrite!? You've spent years with your "we'll beat you come x, we'll beat you come y, we'll beat you come z". We're STILL waiting. and what happens? The next morning you're gone agan for a few weeks, tail firmly between legs, moaning about how we were lucky, or it was offside, or the ref should have blown up, or we cheated, or we were too physical for your little soft lads. March will be no different.

Yes you're above us now, you have been all season, I think you'll be above us at the end of the season as well, I don't mind saying that, but when push comes to shove the only thing that counts is promotion, and neither team will be in the Prem next season. I can count at least 6 teams that are better than both of us, so instead of worrying about who is off out on loan at Blackburn and who is coming in, try looking over your right shoulder, and then you're left....that's Derby and Nottingham Forest about to overtake you.

I have to agree with this. I for one loath you beating us, and the last 11 games (come on guys, 35 years is great for Banter but its not the real deal!) is a pain in the arse. But, as a Lancashire club playing, say Reading, I'd want you to beat the southern tow-rags every time. Same against any Yorkshire club too, for example (no, we are not in bloody Yorkshire!). Love the light-hearted banter. Long may it continue but lets talk football too.

I have two questions: 1. You were supposed to be above us by Christmas, what happened? 2. Why are we STILL 13 points ahead of you? Honest answers please.
1 question for you where did you do your maths? because 9th is not mid table.
Answer the questions no-dad... Your pathetic attempt to change the subject has shown you up there. Come on tell us, what are the answers to the two questions? 1. You were supposed to be above us by Christmas, what happened? 2. Why are we STILL 13 points ahead of you?
Only no dad here is you your on about people not answering your questions but you don't answer any from other people how about you answer the question about how you stated earlier in the season where you was run away leaders and will win the league yeah you won't answer that will you but there's no surprise in that when you dont even know what mid table is in a 24 teamed league is.

And you are 9 points from dropping out of play off places. Call that 6 points when we beat you in March.
You might want to check the league table again Mungo, we are a massive 12 points ahead of Ipswich in 7th place and we have a game in hand on several of those below us. Try again, when you're ready. The 3 points we take of you clowns in March will set us up nicely for the big promotion push, what a boost that will be.
Funny how you leave derby forest and reading out scared much huh.

Please Ed, can we sort this out, leave us on our pages and the Burnley fans on theirs, surely you can block comments that will offend or are not relevant!

Mark - you need to get yourself off here mate and get a life - getting a tad boring.

When can I have my underpants back?
How do you know about them? Had to put something on rushing out of your house when you came back early :)
You sick degenerate. I wondered why my pet Labrador Keano had developed a limp. Maybe you should try getting yourself a human partner? It may seen strange at first but I'm sure you'll adjust in time. Leave my dog alone.
Now now Mark, don't keep calling Mrs. WLUV a dog / Labrador - I know she may stray with me, but that's down to you hanging around in truck-stops, coming home in soiled underwear and beating your meat every time a Rovers story is posted :)
