THE DAILY SPORTS DEBATE: Should Rovers sign Luke Varney?

This Is Lancashire: THE DAILY SPORTS DEBATE: Should Rovers sign Luke Varney? THE DAILY SPORTS DEBATE: Should Rovers sign Luke Varney?

BLACKBURN Rovers are interested in signing Luke Varney from Leeds United.

The 31-year-old forward asked Brian McDermott to be left out of Leeds’ squad for their clash with Ipswich on Tuesday to avoid jeopardising a potential move to Ewood Park.

Would Varney be a good signing for Rovers, and where would he fit in?

With Jordan Rhodes and Rudy Gestede starting to form a promising partnership, would Varney be cover or should be considered for a place in the starting line-up if he signs?

Three strikers is a minimum, you need to cover injury and suspension, is there a queue of prolific goalscorers available ? So if the guy wants to come then get him in.

No, is the short answer to that. His strike record is terrible for a striker where he has played a majority of his games. My friend is a Leeds fan and he cant wait for us to get Varney! With the names being banded about I would rather go for Waghorn as he is young, nearly out of contract but potentially has the ability to become a better striker due to his age. Varney is 31 and how long could he play on the wing for? We have King who could play on the wing.
Waghorn please GB.

I don't think it will do any harm to take him on a short contract to see how he goes, he is experienced at this level.

However GB is all about building a young squad that can grow together so Varney looks like a bit of a punt, and I am a bit concerned about his "refusal" to play for Leeds against Ipswich the other night.

That doesn't sound right to me, a "me" ethic rather than a team ethic perhaps?, we are trying to get rid of players like that not sign more.

Saw him at Portsmouth a few times, not a great player in truth but could add a little experience to the squad which is never a bad thing, although certainly wouldn't start him over Rudy.

Why the heck are we looking at this guy when we have got Best in the squad. This is rediculous to me when we have a class player who can't get a game. Come on Gary stop being stubborn and use Best. We waste enough money on him without wasting more on others.

I have searched my memory to try and recall any success the lad has had but have come up blank.
It strikes me as though GB wants to sign a striker and just about anyone will do. Forget him save the wages and play what we have got. We should not consider taking anyone else on board until we have cleared the decks of Best Etuhu and Olson. I know we have moved a lot on but these guys are the big wage earners. We have two decent strikers plus one or two who could fill in in an emergency so save your money!

As someonewho lives in Leeds, please don't sign Varney. Not only is he not good enough, I'll get constant stick!
A Leeds Season Ticket Holder friend is already laughing at the thought that anothr club might want him, and is prepared to carry him across the Pennines to get rid of him.
His age and attidue (refusing to play) should be enough to leave him alone.

Can't agree with that Crow,. He averages a goal about every three and a half games, not too bad,

Don't think he refused Old Nick. Didn't he ask to be left out so as not to jeopardise a possible move to Rovers. I do think he would be worth a punt to add some experience to a young squad as I think that inexperience has cost us this season.
