THE DAILY SPORTS DEBATE: Is the transfer window good for football?

First published in Sport

WITH the transfer window set to slam shut this week, and the rumour mill kicking into overdrive this week, the big question is, is the January window good for football?

A number of key deals are often struck during the month, such as Juan Mata moving to Manchester United, but most prefer to wait until the summer to conduct their business.

And what sort of impact does it have on Blackburn Rovers, Burnley and Accrington Stanley?

Is it a good thing that the three only have to survive the one month without losing key players or does it hinder the trio when it comes to bringing in new permanent signings?

It's not perfect but it's better than players being unsettled every week by stupid and malicious rumours, which is how it used to be with the free for all.

Most business is done in summer, but it should stop before the season starts, and a winter trading period allows some injury cover and squad tuning to be sorted. A reasonable compromise that brings, or imposes, some stability for all clubs alike, has to be a good thing.

Transfers or manager sackings should only be allowed during the summer months., not during the season.

I don't think there was anything wrong with the old system, and it allowed teams to make adjustments when required, rather than having to wait for a window to open to do so - is this a restriction on trade? What other industry would say you can only buy and sell 2 times a year?

The window leads to inflated prices as everyone is in the market at the same time, for a short period, which drives prices up.

Also, losing a player close to the end of a window can hinder a teams ability to restructure and plan for the coming months e.g. Charlie Austin. An open forum for transfers would alleviate this issue.

I would like to see transfers only in summer during the closed season. Loans anytime to cover for injuries. Out of contract players to move to any club any time.
