Former Blackburn Rovers star Emerton to retire

FORMER Blackburn Rovers star Brett Emerton has announced that he will play the final match of his career on Saturday.

Emerton made almost 300 appearances for Rovers between 2003 and 2011, as well as collecting 94 caps for Australia.

The 34-year-old returned to his homeland to play for Sydney FC but has battled persistent back problems and will retire after Saturday’s A-League clash against Central Coast Mariners.

"I've had back-related issues for several years now," Emerton said.

"I've had a few injections along the way and I promised myself after the last injection at the start of the season it would be my last and it was coming time to either have another one or give the game away.

"The decision to retire wasn't easy. It's been my life for almost 20 years now.

"I've had a fantastic career and I was incredibly fortunate to play professional football for 18 years but I know now is the right time to call it a day.

"I hope to be able to stay in the game moving forward and continue to contribute to Australian football."

Not the most elegant of players but always gave his best, probably enjoyed watching him at right back as much as when he played further forward, he could certainly run with the ball but his shooting was somewhat erratic.

As LP said above, a good bloke, and remembered as a true Rover, good luck to him.

Great guy and the start of the Venky rot was letting him leave without replacing him. One of the first of many bad moves.
Good luck Mr Emerton, we will and have missed you dearly.

Yawn, apart from the last sentence.

Venky's have made some terrible mistakes, for the hard of sight and hearing they actually admitted that though GB last week, give it a rest FFS. There is absolutely sod all we can do about it, just be glad we aren't Hull City or Southampton because for some stupid reason Venky's continue to support us despite clowns like you.

If their owners don't get their way those clubs are gone, sunk without a trace.

Brett, you gave our club great service, best of luck mate, hope everything works our for you, you deserve it.

Bret Emerton has been a fantastic servant of BR. A distinguished and accomplished footballer. Very sad to seeing a fine and honest career coming to its close. Best wishes for the future.
