Thomas and Torres doubles end winless run

WANDERERS Under-18s registered their first win of the season with an impressive 4-1 home triumph against Wolves.
It was the perfect response from David Lee and Tony Kelly’s side after a 7-0 humbling at Sunderland seven days earlier as two goals apiece for Jamie Thomas and Guillermo Torres ended a 14-game winless run.
And Lee, pictured, was delighted with the reaction of his youngsters to the previous week’s disappointment.
He told The Bolton News: “The lads played very well and it was pleasing after last week.
“Jamie scored two quality goals from shots from the edge of the box.
“Guillermo also scored good goals – one from an Elliot Newby cross and an instinctive goal early in the second half.
“With two U16s playing, the young squad showed great enthusiasm as well as a good work ethic.”
The young Whites began brightly at Lostock and took the lead in the 19th minute when Thomas was in the right place to score.
But the lead lasted a matter of moments with Wolves responding immediately.
Jesse Devers was brought down by Jimmy Ball in the box and Ibrahim Keita fired his spot kick straight down the middle of goal and past Will Jaaskelainen.
Wanderers restored their lead on 23 minutes, however, when Torres rose highest to convert Newby’s pinpoint cross.
They increased their advantage eight minutes before half time when a fine run from Thomas ended with an equally good finish past Wolves stopper Harry Burgoyne.
The scoring was rounded off by Torres on 65 minutes when he followed up Jordan Hendrie’s rebounded effort.
It was a first FA U18 Premier League North Group victory of the season for Wanderers and a timely boost ahead of their first FA Youth Cup outing of the season against Sheffield United at the Reebok on Friday, kick off 7pm.
Lee added: “This will give the players confidence and sets the scene now for the FA Youth Cup tie.”
