BLACKBURN Rovers striker DJ Campbell has been released on bail following his arrest by police probing match-fixing claims.

The 32-year-old was held by National Crime Agency (NCA) officers following an investigation by The Sun newspaper.

A spokesman for Rovers said: “Following reports in today’s national media, Blackburn Rovers can confirm that striker DJ Campbell has been arrested.

“The club will be making no further comment on what is now an ongoing legal matter.”

Campbell, who has played top flight football for Birmingham, Blackpool, and most recently QPR, is under scrutiny for a tackle on Ipswich Town's Aaron Cresswell during a league game last Tuesday.

He was held by National Crime Agency (NCA) officers and is the most high-profile name to be detained so far in relation to claims of match-fixing by illegal betting syndicates.

Campbell and four others - Oldham’s Cristian Montano, Tranmere’s Akpo Sodje, ex-Portmouth’s Sam Sodje, and their businessman brother Stephen Sodje - were later released on bail. The sixth, Tranmere’s Ian Goodison, is still in custody.

Speaking about the latest reports, Football League chief executive Shaun Harvey said: "We treat any allegations of criminal activity in our competitions with the utmost seriousness."

The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) said: "These allegations, if proven, unfortunately demonstrate the real issue football faces in terms of corruption and highlights the necessity of the work carried out by the PFA and other stakeholders in the game in educating players of these risks.

"In terms of these specific reports, due to the ongoing investigation by the National Crime Agency, we are unable to comment further at this time."
